If someone is doing a buy I would be interested too

As Jon noted above, it appears he is going to valiantly toss 56 bucks to the wind and order the 968 CS center horn pad to see (1) if it comes with the embossed crest and (2) whether it will fit the repro 930S wheel.

The factory part number for the entire 968 CS wheel assembly is 968-347-084-00-8YR, and is also available and can be ordered through Pelican, or directly from other (discounting) Porsche dealers. It appears that it comes with a hub, which would be non-compatible with various 911 shafts, but could be removed and replaced, I would guess. I'm not a particular fan of either of the wheels, but the 968 piece does have the advantage of being factory and also of having much cleaner one piece leather construction instead of the multi-piece glued construction of the repro 930S wheel.

BTW, does anyone have a picture of a real 930S wheel, in a 930S, that looks anything like the repro item? The only factory ones that I ever recall seeing were the thinner spoked versions such as this that came stock on several oddball factory specials in the mid '80's:

This wheel on the picture is the one that was put on the very few first 930Ss flat nose.
The one we all know and Wayne sells is the later, better known and more common version. And it was available for the 930 and the 968. I *think* the hub was always the concertina thingie.

I did a little research on these steering wheels, and found this quote on a 944S2 owners web site:

"The only difference between this wheel (968cs) and the one used on the 930 is the crest on the horn pad. The 930 wheel has a cloisonné crest and the CS wheel has an embossed crest".

I've also seen 968cs and 930s used interchangably, and it seems 944 owners have installed the 930s reproduction wheel in their cars, so it seems these two wheels are the same.

My only concern would be the signal canceling mechanism, but in the few pictures I've seen of the 968, the wiper and signal switches look suspiciously similar to those in my Targa.

So is the "later" factory 930S wheel you describe the same as the 968CS wheel? (even though it has a later 968 part number, instead of an earlier 911 or 930 part number?)

The only reason that I ask is that I've never seen the "later" version in anything from the factory other than a 968CS. There is however, a picture of the same wheel in a 965S in the September issue of 911 & Porsche World with a different horn pad.

Ok so it seems these wheels are similiar who is going to be the test case to order up one of these wheels...the whole wheel not just the crest? As long as it requires no adaptor I would do it.

Could we work something out with Wayne to get these for us at a group rate to ease the cost?

If someone can tell me how much I would do the test case?

From what I've been reading, the 930S and 968CS are the same wheel, with a different horn pad (the cloisonné crest vs. the embossed crest).

I would guess a different adapter would be required for the 968 and 911 (Carrera) cars. To add a crest to the 930s, it runs $50 or so, but if you could use the 968SC horn pad with the embossed emblem, that would be the cat's meow!!

I still don't have anything definitive yet, so proceed at your own risk.

If thats true then presumably there is a separate 911/930 part number for the nicer factory wheel with the proper 911/930 hub, just like there is for the 968CS version?

The part number for the 993RS version, which could be the same, are...

Thats my question, too, at least for the supposed "later" factory verison.

The 993RS wheel is definitely not the same wheel. I have that wheel in a car and its a factory item made by Momo and supplied with the differently splined 993 hub.

I didn't cancel the order. If they ever decide to ship it to me, great. As Wayne posted on another thread, the Pelican staff doesn't have the time or the inclination to bird-dog individual items.

I have been following this post because I would really like the wheel with the embossed crest. I went to the local Porsche dealer today and they showed me the 968CS wheel. Looks great, feels even better but I can't tell if it will fit on my SC. The parts man with the knowledge wont be back until Monday.

What is the size of the shaft the hub fits onto - he roughly measured it for me and said it was about 3/8" diameter. The wheel looks actually like the pic shown a few replies back. It has the accordian adapter attached so I am unsure at this point on its fit. He did tell me that there should only be two (2) types of shafts and could not recall if I had the larger of the two.

Any enlightenment would be great!

FWIW, the 1993 911-Speedster also had this "embossed-crest" 930S style wheel. (so I'm guessing it would fit the same)

there was a thread about this on rennlist a while back. as it turns out, a porsche club in the uk has them, and will give the embossed pad away for free ONLY if you buy the wheel from them. they cost 200 pounds which, combined with shipping etc, comes out to 4-5 hundred dollars. check it out...

note: they say "inlaid" not "embossed" . . they're talking about the same add-on gold crest.
