If we maintained them like we are supposed tp

I was going through some of my stuff and found the original owners manual for one my 911's. The fluid maintenance schedule is interesting, 6000 miles for the engine oil (jiffy lube and the 3000 mile scam). The interval for the gear oil is also 6000 miles!!! Imagine how few tranny problems we would have if we followed this recommendation!! Whats the drain interval for a 915?

With Mobil 1 synthetic and a daily driver (not tracked) 15K is a good interval for a transmission

I used to change trans and engine oil every 3000 miles. Both flowed out as clean as they went in! I suspect few transaxles have had such frequent changes.

Oils have improved dramatically since '69, so those old recommendations are really obsolete. I have long since reduced my oil change frequency.

The biggest reason it's not a 3000 mile job is the sheer amount of oil. Mr. Anderson (bruce) wrote a great article awhile back about this very thing, along with dino vs synth etc. His whole take was based on volume. Low volume cars need more frequent changes.

Most of the 3000 mile crap was put out in the late 70's and early eighties when oil sucked. Now it's a WHOLE other issue. These drive up oil change outfits are sucking the world dry of oil cuz of their rediculous 3000 mile recommended service mumbo-jumbo. The problem is, most US manuf. state the same for "recommended service" The problem is then a warranty issue with less frequent changes.

I change my oil every summer... and winter... about every six months. The car gets a little thinner in winter, a little thicker in summer. Miles don't matter, but I would say an easy 10,000 to 12,000 on everyday cars. Porsche recommended 15,000 or one year in 1984...

I change the oil in everything with a motor every four months whether it needs it or not. Combustion produces acids in the oil that eat the internal parts over time. With today's good detergent oils it's not dirt that concerns me.
