I'm trying to wire my aftermarket oil cooler fan (it's an SPAL) using the factory relay and I'm having trouble figuring it out. I'm not using a thermal switch, only a switch on the dashboard. There are two lines (12V and Ground) from the fan. I tried wiring the fan using the 101 Projects Directions and some info I found in a search of this forum, but when I turned the key to ACC, the fan turned on and stayed on regardless of the switch being connected to the gray wire. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Should be 4 terminals on the relay. (some have five) Terminal 86 should be battery hot (or key on hot), terminal 85 should go to your switch, the other side of the switch to ground. (you can also wire it the other way), terminal 30 should be battery hot, or key on hot also, and terminal 87 should go to the fan, and the other side of the fan grounded.
Hope that helps..

Wired mine like the carrera factory harness (comes with Pelican kit)
pin 30 (red) to the bottom of the sunroof fuse pin 86 (grey) to the bottom of the cig lighter fuse pin 85 (brown) to one side of the switch, ground to the other side of switch pin 87 (red and white) to the fan motor, other fan wire to ground (make sure your fan is turning in the right direction or else you will have to swap these two to run the other way) pin 87a (red and white) unused

Make sure you go to the right fuse (see owner's manual or inside of fuse box cover) as your's will be in a diifferent place than the article on Pelican (it was an SC). Also, if you are running a lighted switch, you will have to switch the hot and ground terminals.

Thanks for the responses. I followed the tips and it's working perfectly!!! Once again, the members of the Pelican forums come through!

One VERY IMPORTANT note about Terminal #85 on all DIN-conforming relays ... it should ALWAYS BE GROUND, or be connected through a switch to GROUND!!!
It may not be critical for relays without diodes, but in case you ever replace the relay with one with a built-in noise-suppression diode ... it would be a potential FIRE HAZARD if connected with Terminal #86 to ground and Terminal #85 to +12 Volts!!!

So what you're saying is to make sure that one side of the switch is grounded? I have done this. |
