Sound Pad - Best Adhesive

While my engine is out I'm cleaning up the engine bay.

Any suggestions for sound pad installation adhesive? I'm leaning towards 3M spray adhesive, or should I use the 3M weatherstriping stuff in the tube?

I used the 3M heavy-duty spray adhesive--as I remember there's a regular and an HD--andf certainly for the last two years it's worked fine.

3M Super Spray Trim Adhesive. There is a regular version of this, the "Super" version is rated for higher temps I think.

I think 3M calls all their spray adhesives "Super." The two I have used are Super 77 and Super 88. The 77 is for things you may want to remove later, like carpeting. The 88 is for things you want to stay in place forever.

It's not the adhesive but the cheap foam on the pad that breaks down with heat and time that will cause your pad to sag regardless of what adhesive you use. You may notice how the old deteriorated foam is still stuck to the adhesive when you remove the old pad.

I'm thinking of drillng and installing those black plastic buttons that hold up hood blankets on normal everyday generic cars as a permanent fix.

Cheers,

Joe

I went w/ the Appbiz sound mat. I used 3M Super 77 and screws w/ plastic large area washers in the middle and sides where they often sag.

Fit the soundproofing pad to the firewall. Note how you'll need to tuck the bottom sections in: do this now being sure to leave enough at the top end to fit nice and cleanly under the foldable tabs you'll find there.

Pull the pad back now, but leave the bottom tucked in. Spray 1/2 a foot on the firewall and the same on the pad. Stick them together, and then pull them apart. Wait two minutes, then, from the center out, put the two together. Ladder up the pad using the same technique for a foot at a time until you have tucked the top in.

The newer sound pads do not deteriorate like the older ones did: better material is used.

It's quite possible you may not need any adhesive at all if you use fender washers/screws or the generic plastic keepers that regular cars use.

I had to replace the hood blanket on the wifes Olds 98 and no adhesive was used, only the plastic keepers.

Cheers,

Joe

So which sound pad have you guys found to be better? I need to do mine eventually. Maybe when the engine is out for a new clutch.

I cut my own using my old pad as a template over a gray carpet pad that came from a Buick Le Sabre trunk that I found at Pick and Pull.

No way am I paying $150 for a piece of garbage that falls apart in a couple of years.
