What's wrong with MM?
For some reason, when i see ppl post about MotorMeister, there seems to be bad blood. Whats the story?
Are they too expensive? Do they perform bad work? From the site, its looks like they do killer work.... I am considering having work done there in the very near future, so thanks in advance, Michael

Looks can be deceiving... too many people here have been burned/screwed/ripped-off/unhappy with the work they do.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And if you could get any real advice from ANYONE, it would be from the Porsche enthusisasts here on this board...

I think that's a fair question...many folks come here and get the MM party line so they have to wonder. I mean, the prices are so low...
You have to ask if you want your engine rebuilt to a price point, rather than to a standard of execution and OEM parts. If you are doing this yourself, and you can be sure that the parts you are purchasing from MM are OEM, then all's well. Never let bad service get between you and a bargain I always say. John

I understand we're talking about Porsches here, but it's germane that when people overhaul light-aircraft engines--also air-cooled flat fours and sixes--there are two basic ways to do it. They can "zero-time" the engine or they can legally "overhaul to field limits." Zero-timing essentially means that everything that wears, whether it's worn out or not, is replaced with a new part, and when the engine is reassembled, it is essentially new again and has zero hours of running time. When you overhaul a Lycoming or Continental to "field limit," you retain all the parts that are _not_ worn beyond the limits specified in the official overhaul manual. It can be within .0001 inch of that limit, but if it hasn't crossed the line, it's considered good to go under the specs for a "field-limits overhaul." Naturally, such overhauls are substantially cheaper than is zero-timing an engine.
it is my understanding that what MM does is akin to--though not necessarily exactly the same as--a field-limits overhaul. Stephan

You'll never get a straight story here on this bb about MM. They've done poor work for some and good work for others. Unfortuneately you'll probably get all the folks that say bad work but never had anything done by them personally. It's usually someone they know or heard about. They're are a few on the bb that have legitimate bad stories and anyone with a good outcome won't speak up for fear of getting blasted. MM does poor at paperwork and estimates and their word seems to be worth very little if something does go wrong, at least according to the people that have had personal problems with them. The guarantee they provide is basically next to worthless but so are many from other shops if the situation goes completely south. Protect yourself at all times and get everything in writing up front. Also check the BBB in CA. Know what you're asking for and listen to make sure you get an answer to your question and not just an answer. Get copies of the work orders for machine work and spec sheets for checking parts when determining wear limits. These are things you should do with any shop that you've not dealt with in the past.

I know of two direct stories....a 2.2 rebuild that seems to run fine. No leaks, no problems. Another one an MFI engine refused to rev past 5k rpms. The fix was a total rebuild.
Since MM is in SmelLA and I'm a 100 miles north....the 50% of direct bad news will keep me here.....

In addition to my personal experience with MM I hear stories. Last week I was talking to a mechanic friend of mine about a customer who came in with a MM rebuilt engine. As usual the customer was sucked in by MM's $3-4K price but eventually paid MM $10K. I hear this sort of thing again and again.
My friend also noted that whatever sealant they used seem to work. -Chris

MM is no price leader. The work I had done (total rebuild without new pistons or cylinders) cost me as much as having Steve at Rennsport do a total rebuild with new parts. Just save yourself the frustration and stress and have a reputable shop do the work. It is easier and cheaper in the long run.

i often wonder whether some of these low posters who ask questions about MM are indeed MM moles. lawsuits happen, and i would hate to see pelican suffer one, so... loose lips sink ships.

I might be a "low poster" but I am no mole, although I wondered if that might spring up. I have a 70T. I got semi-burned by the PO who lied through his teeth. I am alos looking for Zenith jets because the PO lived at high altitude. He said the engine was rebuilt but then again, he said alot of shyte. I was checking my options, becuase everytime I see MM come up for discussion, there is always a beware clause thrown in for measure. I am afraid of getting deeper into my pocket. I was actually thinking about sending my shyte Zenith carbs down there, and was interested in the group's experiences. And "low poster' is somewhat deragatory sounding , don't you think? You gotta start posting at zero if i'm not mistaken....
