I think I found my clunk (Can Konis be rebuilt?)

I jacked up the "S" tonight and started poking around. Honestly, I havent been under there that much other than to replace a halfshaft. When I took off the right rear shock, this is what I found. the housing cover was loose and the bushing in it was destroyed and then I noticed that the bottom edge seems to be contacting the shock mount at full compression (notice the witness marks on the shock) Should there be a spacer in there?
It seems like I read that Koni will rebuild the shocks for a fee. Is that correct? I hate to buy new ones if I dont have to. Thanks for any advice.

Ive called Koni NA about rebuilding the rears and was told it was cheaper to buy new ones.

Strange thing is, I put the car back down and watched the drivers side shock while my wife rocked it and it doesnt look like there is any way for those shocks to be hitting the shock mount. I dont know what would make the marks in them although they are rusty enough to make me belive that they are old damage and not recent. On the drivers side, there is a light clunking sound coming from the heim joint on the base of the shock. Is this charactoristic of this type of shock?

Koni's have a lifetime warranty for the original owner/purchaser.

You have to have an invoice from a Koni shock dealer for the warranty to be effective.

They also have an authorized rebuild facility in Hilliard OH, just west of Columbus (800 388 8783)
Make sure you tell Plow you are playing with a Koni, he'll get a woody for sure.

Fortunatly I frequent the Hebron area with my job. I will see if I can hand deliver them and see what the scoop is onthe rebuild facility. Is it typical for a heim jointed shock to clunk a little?

No clunks from my experience. My car has factory Konis and are silent even though the rubber has deteriorated a bit and they have been leaking. Keep us updated on rebuild possibility and cost. I have been thinking about new ones myself and have found them advertised as low as $509.60 for all four (saving my pennies)..so I think rebuilding very old or very rusty ones would probably not be worth it.

Well, I talked to the guy at Koni today and found him to be very nice and helpful. I am going to hand deliver the shocks, but he said that my style shock with the two way adjustment and heim joints is a $500 each shock new!!!
The cost for a complete rebuild is $150 plus parts so it may be the way to go. Im sure I could replace these shocks for a lot cheaper with something that would match my driving style, but the previous owner really had this thing set up and I hate to downgrade it now. Call me silly or a sentemental fool...
I will take my dig camera and maybe get some pics of the rebuild facility.

It's too bad that they aren't fairly new, cause koni has an excellent replacement policy where if anything fails with the product after like 30 days or so they'll replace it with a new one at no charge.

Trust me, it looks far worse in the picture than it really is. I wuold have been to embarrased to post a pic if it REALLY looked that bad =)
