Need help assigning value to an '86 951
Hey all -
I have posted this thread over in the 944Turbo forum but would like more response. Many of you are 944 owners / fans as well and may be able to help. My mother-in-law (that's right) owns this car and needs me to sell it for her. About eight months ago her husband, my dad-in-law, suffered three strokes while on the operating table fo a heart valve replacement. He is messed up bad. We don't expect him to drive again. She needs to sell the car to help pay his bills. He was in the hospital for four months. You can only imagine the bills. The car: BONE STOCK '86 944Turbo Guards red / black interior / phone dial wheels. 52,000 original miles No maintenance sans anual oil changes due to extreme low mileage. Driven only on perfect days. Very dusty right now, has sat in garage for nearly a year. I have started it and it runs fine. I hate to see them part with their prize but under the circumstances it is the right thing to do. The price I have in my head is $10,000. Is that about right given the conditions stated above?

Excellence Mag says it's worth between about 6500 and 10,000 if it is in excellent condition. You might tack on an extra 10% for low mileage.

Kelley Blue book says $6700 with all the bells and whistles for CA. Back there 8-9K would be the top price I would think it get......

I think a clean low miles 951 would command decent money these days. I remember seeing some a year or two back that people were asking $15K. Doubt they were getting it, but I would think over $10K if it is really that clean.

10k is about the range, if it was a later model (87-88), or an S it would get top dollar. But to a racer they may really want that car, it's got the early offset so fuches and such can fit on the car. GL with it.

For reference, I sold my BPU 87 951 (Guru software, boost goodies, 993 wheels, etc) which was a 9/10 cosmeically and mechanicall with 100,000 miles in March for $9,500.

I paid 10K even for a car similar to what you describe about 2 years ago- 50K miles, silver, fuchs, options, '86. I was looking specifically for an '86. Northern CA. The guy had it on the market for something close to 3 months and didn't need to sell. FYI.

The 944 turbo forum is pretty slow, try the regular 944 forum. No maintenance is going to deter people, at 52k I'd be extremely worried about the timing belts, I wouldn't even start the car.

Thanks for the info. The maintenance (or lack of) was included purposely. This car MUST have the timing belt replaced. Time and mileage also dictate a look at the water pump and clutch.
Cosmetically this car is a 9/10 and would be a 10/10 with a wax job. It just needs some expensive preventive maintenance. I'd like to sell the car as-is because I now live 500 miles away from my in-laws and can't be of much help to them. It sounds like I will ask $10K. If no takers I can wait 'till spring clean it up and try again.
