Not legal for cops to use speed camera's in Canada. The rule goes that if they dont' hand you a ticket on the spot, then they can't ticket you. Technically they can't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was you were driving that specific car

btw, good to see you back on the forums, Adam! |
Sorry but you may be correct in your local but in the city of Calgary speed cameras are a dime a dozen, luckily not on the highways since that is a provincial jurisidication and the provincial politicians don't like to have to dawdle on the way back to their rural ridings.
There are no points involved since you can't prove the driver, but the tickets are expensive. |

If the police get a complaint from Joe Citizen about you speeding, they most certainly can issue a ticket. Its the responsibility of the complainent to show up in court to give evidence against you if you want to fight it. |
I calculated that with stock gearing in my '79 930 I should hit about 187mph at redline in a vacuum. With my 330+ rwhp and drag coefficient approaching 0.4, the car probably can't do over 167.
I ran from the cops once, almost 20 years ago (and got away). The adrenaline rush difference between running from a cop and racing wheel to wheel is about the same as the difference between running a 50 yard dash and sleeping. I can't imagine ever doing that again.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/spankA.gif |
Here in California speeding is an infraction punishable by a fine only. However in the case of 180+ MPH, the crime would be a misdemeanor (reckless driving) punishable by a fine and no more than a year in county jail. THe driver would probably have his license revoked as I think this is a 3 point violation. If the driver were running other drivers off the road, the crime could be bumped to a felony (assault with a deadly weapon-the weapon being the car). If of course the driver tried to get away, the crime would be a misdemeanor/ felony (evading a police officer) depending upon the severity.
However, no action could take place in the event this was not personally witnessed by an officer, unless it fell into the felony category. This crime does not fall under one of the misdemeanor exceptions for an arrest out of the officer's presence. Also, in California police do not use roadblocks, unless it was an absolute last resort like catching a Richard Ramirez or something. Spike strips or a helicopter would be best and safest for the public. Watch out for California Highway Patrol. They are the best police drivers and will chase you 'till the wheels fall off. |
Anybody here have an atlas? If so, check it out. "Alligator alley" is possibly the longest stretch of straight road in Fla. Little traffic. I believe this story. Having once driven through a radar trap at redline in a '72 911S. Trap known in advance, thanks to also having a CB... I knew where the lone radar cop was, and knew the next exit was 2 1/2 miles from that spot, with lots of escape routes.... Just one of many fond memories...:D

ATR911...Kitchener isn't that far from Hamilton or Dunnville....and speed cameras ARE used by the OPP in the Cayuga and Norfolk area.
And....even if you think you have gotton away...the knock on the door when you are watching TV 2 hours later means they still gotcha!! And...it's not unkown for law enforcement to pull a tractor trailer across the road ahead of the speeder....his choice...stop before...or under the big rig. Bob |
That's for effing sure Bob...Once, long ago, I had FIVE cop cars in my driveway...long after I'd gone to bed. It seems that there was some local knowledge about my car that I hadn't counted on. Anybody who thinks cops are stupid, IS stupid. Just my humble opinion. Shortly after the incident I mentioned? I couldn't take the 911 anywhere without having a police escort. I decided to park the car for a few years...The Bobby Fuller song title says it all: "I fought the law, and the law won"...

The best drive is Alligator Alley in the middle of the night in a convertible. The Stars are unbelievable! About five years ago, about 3 in the morning and coming back from BS Christmas Party I'm cruising in my old Alfa Romeo - doing a healthy 100 when I get passed by two cars like I am standing still. One was a 911 - the other was either a viper or modded Vette. All I remember was the sound of the 911 and it was in front.

Hey Bob,
Actually, at one point we had radar cameras in Ontario but a politician wanted to make some people happy and we sold them to (and i'm not joking here) the province of Alberta. :D As for them being able to ticket you after the fact, i'm not 100% sure only going by what the hot sales lady told me and some short conversations I've had where the ticketing officer didn't have any tickets with him anymore (all gone i guess) I believe the tractor story, not that it matters cause I don't think i'd ever try and pull anything like that, insurance is too silly for me as it is. Wife speaking:
Alligator Alley sure is a straight line on a map but last time I saw it there were heaves and cracks of various dimensions everywhere. I can't imagine attempting 100mph on that road unless it was re-engineered and rebuilt from scratch. |
Not to hiijack the post, but there was a case of a guy in Montreal driving his new 911 at excess of 250 KPH. He had 3 female passengers with him and when one of them asked him to slow down she told her not to worry because he was a Formula Ford driver and he knew how to drive that fast.
The car hit a pot hole and proceeded to flip so high and far that it took out a telephone pole 3/4 the way up with a clean break. If I remember correctly, 1 or two of the women were thrown out the back window and survived (barley). I guess if you're in europe it's a different story where the roads are designed for the kinda speed but I don't think that I'd be interested in testing the top speed of some of the newer sports cars these days on our roads here in north america. Granted, I've pushed it, 200+ KPH on a 4 lane highway with low to no traffic, but personally 200 I think is my practical limit when I want to push it. I'd much rather find an On/Off ramp and push it a little there, more potential for broken car but less for broken bones. I'm done now :) Adam |

My guess it was the pôhlice unit in question slightly exagerrated the alleged Porsche's speed so as to cover up their utter incapacity to do anything at all. Porsche has more credibility than a UFO.

I actually liked the radar cameras. I've always said its driver inattention that causes most crashes, not simply speed. It was so easy to pick out the radar camera equipped vans that you simply slowed down when you saw one then resume speed after a couple of hundred yards. It was always those people that don't pay attention that got the tickets, afterall IMO they are the ones causing the crashes. It was indeed a rare sight to see cops manually handing out tickets when the vans were in use.
