I think it was a 917/30 out for a test run. 180mph is nothing! :D

Adam

I guess people call in to the station when they see him fly by on the highway and report him but unless the trooper actually pulls you over (which is VERY hard to do on a highway with exits every 5 miles) they can't ticket him.

That comment is not true. if a citizen will lay a formal complaint and give a statement and Police can ID the vehicle, A ticket can be issued to the Registered owner of the car, and it can be just mailed to him.

The only thing is the citizen would have to be prepared to testify in court if the owner pleads not guilty.

My wife actually just had to go to court for one of these, guy on a crotchrocket 100km/hr plus in residental area . Found GUILTY $300 Fine. (no points as it is to the owner not necissarily driver)

I'm guessing that was on the 401?

Once read about a pedestrian that got hit on the 401, was run over repeatedly for several hours before highway workers were called by OPP to pull off the road what they initially thought was a bag of garbage, then a dead deer, then realized it was wearing (remnants) of clothes. They had to do lab analysis to determine gender. Nothing identifiable was salvageable.

Love that highway.

I loved my decade living in Miami. If the guy had hit a 'crossing' alligator, I have just three words for ya...

boots...wallets...belts...

There are no points involved since you can't prove the driver, but the tickets are expensive.
whats that all about? here in the uk, you're "assumed" to be the driver, and you get points.

there are motorcycle cases where because of the helmets people have claimed it wasnt them and also claimed (human rights?) the right not to say who was riding - i think it is failing though, in a recent court case....

if no points were involved everyone would vote to keep the cameras, rather than get the traffic cops back on the streets.

svandamme 12-05-2003 03:47 AM

cameras :

checkout http://www.tuftufclub.com/fotos/slooppaal/slooppaal.html

the favorite is a tire with a gallon of gasoline hung to burn on the box
it's cheap and effective

dickster 12-05-2003 05:41 AM

4th ones funny.

there is a large movement in the uk doin similar - i cant condone it but.....wth

D Hanson 12-05-2003 07:41 AM

I heard this was a pretty common occurence in that stretch. Drug runners would turn off their head lights and bust a move at very high rates of speed. I saw this on Discovery or some channel like that talking about bad wrecks resulting from such incidents.

svandamme 12-05-2003 07:44 AM

i guess a 911 isn't much of a dope running vehicle
it's to expensive if they impound it

on the other hand, 50 kilo of columbian sunshine would do wonders for the weight distribution of an early 911 :D

About 30 years ago one of my friends' dad was out doing a balls to the wall run in his 275 GTB-4 ... it was out near Burbank/Pasadena. He passed a cop doing 160+ and the cop actually gave chase - needless to say, my friend's dad got away. About a week later he was pulled over for doing 50 on the same freeway by the same cop who proceeded to give him a verbal lashing for his prior indiscretions.

Try that today and you're faced with a long drop followed by a quick stop ... it's a different world.

PS: Cops won't give chase if you run from them in the canyons ... but they will radio ahead and have their "buddies" waiting.;)

fear and loathing in las vegas has an interesting strategy for dealing with cops :D

Few people understand the psychology
of dealing with a Highway Traffic
Cop. Your normal speeder will
panic and immediately pull over to
the side. This is wrong.

It arouses contempt in the cop heart.

Make the bastard chase you. He
will follow. But he won't know
what to make of your blinker signal
that says you're about to turn right.

This is to let him know you're
looking for a proper place to pull
off and talk.

It will take him a moment to
realize that he is about to make
180 degree turn at speed... but you
will be ready for it, braced for
the G's and the fast heel toe work.
i love that movie :D:D

Paul Tracy was on Letterman following his win of the CART championship and he said that he had his Porsche Turbo up to 180+. I'm sure he has no reason to brag or BS.

I had heard this "story" a few years ago.

The had been reports of highway patrol officers on the Alley using laser guns and all of a sudden a 200mph reading would show up. This usually occured between 2:00am and 4:00 am when there were not many people on the road. When the cops were asked to descibe what happened they would say "There was no one in sight and all I heard was what could be described as a airplane motor. After many months of investigation it was concluded that it must be a plane running drugs, flying low to escape radar and without lights. A few months there was a car accident that closed down both sides of the road and backed up traffic for a mile or so. About 4 hours after this accident there was another single car accident reported at the same spot. When the police arrived the driver was fine but his Black Lamborgini with all the lights and reflectors covered with electrical tape was totaled. The police looked in the cabin of the car and saw about 100 kilos of cocaine and a pair of night visions goggles. Apparently, the driver was running drugs with his lights off using the night vision goggles reaching speeds of 200mph. The wreck was caused buy a single piece of window trim from the accident that occured earlier in the day. ;)

The 930 4 speed redlines at 7000 RPM +/- 200 RPM per the manual. I have had my car over 7000 RPM and never hit the rev limiter. At 3500 RPM in 4th I am right around 100, so the car should top out over 200 if I could get to redline in 4th. I have also had my speedometer calibrated by Palo Alto Speedo so I know that it is dead on accurate (as opposed to the Porsche factory settings which seem to run 5 or more MPH high).

Several years back I was on one of my favorite country roads kickin out the jams. I turned onto the local well patrolled h-way and am heading back to town. I'm only doing 80 or so and this common azz peekup truck flips a hairy U and starts following me. I have only about 5 miles back to town and since this yahoo guy is obviously following me I decide to bait him at the upcoming intersection to see what is on his mind. Sure enough he gets right on my tail and I say to my co-pilot we're gone. I hit it. This particular road does have some traffic so I hold it down and as I turn the last corner to my house am held up by some traffic. I see this guy gaining fast so kick it in for the last couple of miles and am in the driveway already swilling a cold one when this guy come screeching to a halt and hops out. He waltzes up the driveway and tells me I was speeding. I say, "and"? Well, I'm friends with some hway cops. I ask, "and"? The family happened to be in the yard and they're looking like what is Napoleons problem? And yes even an old 930 can do 180+ with enough horses.

That's the story I heard about, night goggles and all. No Porsche. It was a Lambo.

I'd love to be able to pass a cop on a trafficless portion of interstate going in excess of 200 just to see what would happen, but this is more fantasy than real since I don't think I want to know what would happen. Maybe driving the Dauer 962 or the Koenigsegg going about 230. Do you think he'd just pull over and stop scratchin his head?

Nope, never run, but I have heard of people having the cops show up at their house hours later after an evasion.

I also think it would be fun to be able to drive a Radical SR3, or Nascar or F1 car or something like that to work, maybe a tricked out Club racer or GT3R or something even, but in the meantime I'll keep driving my 3.2L, and grinning like an idiot the whole way.
