Who else hates 911s?

I'm kidding of course, but seriously don't you just hate 911s from time to time, there's no other car where an oil change could take 3 hours, and you'd walk away missing a rear rocker panel. Well, it's not missing, it's just not on the car, and I don't know if I can put it back on the car or if I need a new one. I think I'm going to make it go back on the car though becuase I really don't feel like going through the insanity of getting a new one, getting it painted, praying that it actually fits, and installing it.
Mine was removed, don't ask, and one of the clips broke along with one of the two tabs that goes into it, so I think I'm just going to glue the remaining tab into it and then install it. I'd feel better about it if I had that bar that attaches the panel to the body. I guess I'll get a part number for it and order it on Monday, I've been meaning to do that for a while anyway.

later,
Andrew

I can do an oil change in about 25 minutes.

Course, I have access to a lift... that makes it a bit faster.
I've never "timed" myself though... changing the oil shouldn't be a race... That's one of those jobs you don't want to rush.
That'd be as smart as having a speed-brake fluid flushing competition or something

I'm confused. Changing the oil in my 911 takes ten minutes if the engine is warm, and thats taking my time.

My new Audi isn't as easy, but its maybe six plastic clips to remove the underbelly, and a drain plug. Oil filter's right there too.

What cars are easier than a new Audi and a 911 to change the oil on?

My parents used to have a Toyota Previa... talk about a PIA... the engine's under the front seats!

I think its a love hate thing for me. Then again the PO overtightened every bolt and stripped one of the A/C bolts that hold it down, and sheared two lug nuts, as an example. Now at least for most of the minor jobs I know I did it last and can only blame myself.

Lets put it this way. I have FWD v6 Olds as my daily driver. To change plugs I have to pull the rear motor mounts and jack the engine up to change them. now THAT's a PITA

oh, i didn't say this normal, in fact, I'm sure it was just my bad luck... I didn't have access to a lift at my shop and I really had to get the oil changed, so I went to my dad's mechanic, and before everybody yells at me for going to a non-porsche specific mechanic, they're really good guys, and it honestly wasn't their fault. A drain plug got stuck and would not come off, after rounding it off we decided screw it, we'll just disconnect the hose and drain the oil from there. That went fine, but to try to get more leverage on the drain plug they'd taken off the panel, and once it came time to go back on the little (&#^$&#^! just did not want to go back on and the tab snapped, and here we are.
I had my head stuck in a book, so I didn't realize how long they were screwing around with the drain plug, and then we took forever trying to get the panel back on... lol, to me this is standard with a 911, nothing can go smoothly

I hate my 911; that's why I take it to the track and flog it every chance I get!

Actually, I've had pretty much the opposite sentiments working on 911s over the years.

On lots of other cars, I have the "geez, why did they do this" or "wow, this is really cheaply made" feelings, but on the 911s, things generally make sense to me (from a mechanical standpoint, ergonomics etc. may be a little different), and I'm always amazed at the quality of the parts, the fit and finish, etc.

They definately don't make 'em like this anymore!

As far as oil changes, it's hard to imagine it being much easier. No need to jack or lift the car up, slide a couple of oil pans underneath, reach under and drain the oil, and the filter is right there out in the open and easy to get to.

It's an exotic car -- it's supposed to be hard to work on.

Don't be confused by the fact that it can be used as a daily driver -- that's just German practicality.

Cool

I always have looked at it this way.

The germans make things complcated to make them good!

Think about it.

I have found over the years that in many cases they probably have "over-engineered" it to fit a closely defined criteria. In many cases just a crude lump of something would have done just as well.

Have a good time changing oil.

Somethings on a Porsche can be over-engineered, but thats fine with me. I just see those things as very well built and thought out.

And whether an oil change takes 10 minutes or 30 minutes, it dosn't really bother me because its on a Porsche and you only have to cahnge it every so often anyways.

Oh, face it, you love your 911. It gives you something to complain about! Hey, there's not bragging rights at the company picnic complaining about that darn Olds Cutlass.... The very fact that we have something to fix on a Porsche makes us at the top of the class.

Can't contribute about a 911 because I don't yet have one, but my wife's '03 4Runner V6 has the oil filter mounted at the front and top of the engine, with a little lip around it to catch the oil that runs out when you remove it. The lip also has a drain plug, a nice touch. Of course, at 6500 it already has some rattles, dealership here I come.
