The specialty glue for rearview mirrors (sold at the basic auto parts place) works great IF you clean everything with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, and follow instructions to the letter. I've had to replace several mirrors over the years and the glue works great.

Elmer "Stix-All" Reorder No. E-650, Ace Hardware type stuff will do the deed. Maybe not quite a strong as the specialty glue, but good enough if you're not rough-housing. Regardless, cleanliness is key. Mark outside of windshield where you had the mirror base (or adjusted to your preference, including checking visor clearance). Purpose: install with glue and let set without disturbing the bond.

I bashed mine off twice with my helmet (have a big head). Loctite make a two part glue specifically for rear view mirrors. Have no knocked it off since.

I tried the stuff from auto parts store when I replaced my windshield it worked for me. However the color wasn't the same as the original. Concours guys might have had a fit.

My mirror fell off months ago, but I haven't put it back on, because I like the clear front view without it. I have found that the two side mirrors give me all the rear view that I need. Anyone else out there driving rearview mirrorless?

i drove w/o a rear view mirror for a few weeks last year, and i really did not like it. i did not feel safe backing up, and i did not like not knowing what was behind me. i have a '73 which only has a driver's side mirror, so i was not seeing much. i also have a race seat which somewhat limits my side-to-side body movements, so it was not easy to turn around to get views.
i too, used the rear view mirror glue found at your LAPS (local auto parts store) and it worked fine. however, i'll mirror (tee hee) the view expressed earlier that you MUST thoroughly clean the old glue off the glass. i used a combination razor blade and alcohol to get it all off.
