anyone run three way speakers in a 911?

I would like to run something like this in my car

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3070159585&category=32818

Has anyone done this? Or does anyone provide an enclosure to do so?

Thanks!!

James

I use three ways. I have a set of the Focal Utopias. Didn't like them too much. I actually like their Poly Keval 165 K2 woofer better, but the Uopia TN 51 tweeter is much better than the TN 47 that comes in the Poly Kevlar line. The Utopia mid is very transparent and nice, but the woofer is lacking low end punch in the 80 to 250 hz range.

The best sounding speaker in this price range is the Dynaudios. Also, Focal 165s are not exactly 6.5 inches so they may require enlarging the hole just a bit. Dynaudios also come in funky sizes but they just released a 6.5 inch compoenent set. I use the 7 inch.

Would 3-way speakers be excessive?

I have 6" Diamond Audio components in the front, and 4" Diamond Audio components in the rear. Plus an itsy bitsy Boston Accoustic 8" sub. Seems to work well - and best of all the screws in the car haven't started to rattle yet!

Sounds like Blk Bird's got the best setup. Your best off going with a set of component's front an rear and running a small sub. I really like the infinity perfect 10. It's very smooth and not that annoying bass that something like an MTX put's out. As far as components, I like the MB Quart's in my audi a lot. I paid a $100 per set and for the money they sound pretty good, plus ther made in germany. You should probably get an amp, most deck's dosn't really push that loud without distortion. You would also need an amp with the focal's.

Caveat, I am the extreme when it comes to car audio and dropped well over $ 10k on the system in my 964 so alot of people would consider mine to be over kill. My systems are SQ and are not set to go boom boom, but they can be if I wanted them to. I, however, do rival home systems and can play loud and clean even over my cabriolet's engine sound with a cat by-pass, GHL primary and secondary bypass with the top down.

Big difference in high quality three way set especially if using an electronic crossover. Even with passive, each drive it operating in its optimal range. The mids will give most voice and they were be more efficient and hence clean focused on a set frquency range.

I run MB QSD with Esotec tweeters in the back. I swapped out by Esotecs that came with the Dynaudios for Scan Speak revelators, but the back is mainly for fill. You will get the best sound stage, imaging and clarity running a quality three way up front and a well blended sub from the rear without rear speakers. I only turn the gains up on my rear speakers when when the top is down.

My box is very shall and I have been relegated to using a very shallow sub (6 inch). I am now using a Diamond M6 Titanium which is very accurate and plays deep. This is an SQ sub, but it will hit very hard if you turn the gains up and hit it with some power.

If willing to go with Focal Utopias, I would not go with Diamond components. Too bright for my taste, but good spekaers for the price. Make sure you audtion both Diamond components to hear the tweeter and any Boston speakers. Boston are very colorful and the opposite of s Focal Utopia which is transparent and a nutral accurate reproduction of clean sound. Just not enough 80 to 250 hz.

If your interested in $ 800.00 dollar speakers, I would not try to steer you toward anything bu Dynaudio, CDT High Definition or better, McInotsh MSS 650s, Morrel, Rainbow, Lotus Series, Scan Speak, or Swan.

Here is table full of rejects that did not make the cut in various cars, many of which retail in the $ 700 to $ 1,000 range.

Note, the $ 1,200 Focal Utopias on the bottom front to the left that didn't make the cut, along with the $ 1,400 McIntosh MSS 650s on the front row. There are also MB Qs $ 1,100, CDT High Defintions, CDT Carbo Fibre one speaker of which was never taken out of the plastic, Boston Pros and etc.

I am very Picky. I will audition speakers on one side for comparision test and etc. If you do not want to cut the third hole, go with the new Dynaudio 6.5 with the Esotec tweeter upgrade.

D Hanson: I have the tweets & woofs as I wait for my car to be finished. Any suggestion for a speaker to handle 500 - 3.5K Hz? I plan on a 4-channel amp driving the mid-bass directly and with passive crossovers on the 500-20K channels.

Thanks for any tips!

D Hanson, you have more $$$ on your reject table than I have in my car! I bet your local car audio stores love to see you coming. Add that to the cars in your signature, my dear god man, could I have a little? Pity about your not being able to hear your 964 though, 10k in SQ audio equipment, and if I were to drive your car I'd turn it all off.

techweenie: here is what I use in my 964.

http://www.woofersetc.com/product.asp?0=270&1=609&3=1331

$ 125 each.

Also check out www.madisound.com for great raw drivers if you already have grills.

Bought most of it off ebay and etc. and do most of the install stuff myself, but I am having shelves profressionally built for the 964 now because my sub amp is too large to fit. That's why I have that Pheonix Gold in there for the time being.

Stereo is on only half to 1/3 of the time. I took it out today to exercise it with the top down. I love to listen to it with the top down. I turned the stereo on for about the last 5 minutes of a 30 minute drive.

On the Madisound page, check out the Accuton 2 inch mid ranges. They are about $ 200.00 each, but I have been real tempted to buy a set of these. They also have grill covers on them.

MB Quarts are okay if you go with the QSDs, but you can get comparable for less. The CDT Hign definitions are are about $ 400.00 and they sound just as good. If go with lower priced MB Quart like Premium or Reference series, make sure you attenuate your tweeter by about 4 to 6 dbs or the tweeter will sound harsh.

http://www.woofersetc.com/product.asp?0=239&1=240&3=1171

The MB Quart Qs are very good to use in the back of a convertible though because they have speacers. I could not fit CDTs back there and CDT have a fairly shallow, but wide basket.

I do love the MB Quart QM 25 tweeters though. They cannot be bought in a component set and they are very large (about 1.5 inches).

D Hanson: Thanks!

I'm a big fan of Dynaudio & Vifa as brands where you're paying for intrinsic, rather than extrinsic quality.

Mr. Hanson, are you SURE you don't want to adopt?

My car is at one of the most fantastic audio shops in the area and I'm going to pick it up this weekend. I'll have plenty of pics to post!

D Hanson & others

thanks!

I have a nak 400 deck and will probably run three way fronts with a small sub. I am no way as picky as Hanson so I think that I'll just take his advice on a mid range system and be done with it!

D Hanson, look for a PM from me

THanks !

mjshira, I'm thinking about the Nak 400, myself.

How is the FM section? I've heard it's not as good at receiving FM as other, comparably-priced head units...

I don't have it hooked up for radio and in fact plan to run SAT so I wouldn't know. It is a great stereo. I don't like the other units that have 20 different colors and switches etc, this is old school kick ass stereo
