Setting Points Gap
Am I the only one who pulls the dist when setting points gap? I set the motor to the No. 1 cylinder then pop the rotor and dist and set them on the bench, and then re-check once in in the car. Then set timing, check dwell etc... Might take a bit more time, but I get into a routine and it seems to work better for me.

That's the way I always did it. I can't imagine doing it in the car, must be a royal PIA

Super royal PITA - I used to always pull it, until I went to a Pertronix.

I have thought several times about going to Pertronix. I guess I am a masochist, there's something Zen about having to chase my arse around for a time tweaking and adjusting - but makes the tuning effort a sweet reward when its spot on.

Chris,
I ALWAYS pull it out, because that gives you a chance to pull the point plate and cam, and clean up the centrifugal advance parts ... so you can lube and head off any future 'sticking' problems! Been doing that since 1969 when I installed a Bosch '010' distributor in my hotrod Beetle. If you do the Pertronix 'thing' ... your centrifugal advance mechanism will get NEGLECTED! And, it won't like that treatment, so it will reward you with a sudden case of 'off-color' running, out in the boonies where you won't be prepared to fix the problem!
