Randy - there were 4 different VDO mechanical speedos used on the Carrera RS:
Originally they were fitted with 150mph or 250kph versions (same as 911T/E/S) Then, after 9th March 1973 they switched to 180mph or 300kph depending on the country they were first exported to. This is the 180 mph version ![]() & this is the 300kph version ![]() Andy '69 911E----->R |

I have one very similar to the first pic. but doesn't have the
silver dot. I have a 180mph mechanical speedo for a 74-Carrera that had 2.7RS motor. Part# 911 641 506 29 interested? ![]() Last edited by bike2ride95; 04-21-2015 at 10:58 PM.. Reason: spacings |

Interestingly, my car has a speedo that looks just like the one in the top pic above. The PO of my car bought it and installed it around 1980 or so before he brought the car to the US (he was working in Germany at the time) to replace the 250 kph speedo that was original to the car (he gave me the kph speedo also).
The odometer gear crapped out about 15 years ago, so I pulled it out and put the kph speedo back in. When I did that, I noticed the 180 mph speedo has what appears to be a date stamp on the back indicating 1973. Could it be an original RS speedo? I had heard rumors that VDO put out a bunch of 180 mph speedos in the late 80s and I figured it was one of those... Maybe not? Do these original RS 180 mph speedos have a specific PN? A few years ago, I sent the 180 mph speedo to North Hollywood and got the gear fixed, etc. It looks like brand new now. The odometer gear crapped out on the 250 kph one also, so I put the 180 mph one back in the car. OK, I'm rambling now...

did you get my email? any way, this 6 73 date code speedo was in my late 73 E that I recently purchased. Part number on the edge of the dial is 911 641 506 29 but unlike bike2ride95 speedo it is a silver button . so the dial has the same part number but the unit has earlier date code with silver button ![]()

hey guys, sorry for not getting back earlier ..
aluminium cap is pre-74 model, so 73 for example .. my speedo looks like the on on top, pn is 911 641 506 00, says: speedo, 180 mph, Carrera 2.7, US/Canada Version mike: yeah, they do have specific pn's, post yours and I'll check jeff: 911 641 506 29, weird, can be found in old PET catalogs, it says '74-'77 911 .. sometimes the use products w/ same numbers in other markets or with other options. the updated (current) catalog doesn't show this part number at all ..
