At the risk of looking stupid myself, the same exact thing happened to me when some friendly Mexicans helped me pull my Plymouth Acclaim out of the sand in Ensenada. I did tie the strap to the bumper, but the entire bumper came flying off (well, one side at least - the other side held on and towed the car out of the sand. Don't ask me how the car got onto the sand - we were trying to get my sailboat that had been wrecked in the waves. It was a very bad day...
