The first rule of chipping porsches is, "Don't talk about chipping Porsches". As it turns out, Loren is really Steve's alter ego. They are in fact the same person! Ha, I figured it out.
There's a saying about "Arguing on the internet is like..." If there were perfect scientific dyno runs, everyone used the search function for an hour before posting a question, illegal car mods were banned, and all non- 911 Technical topics were deleted this would be a pretty boring bbs. I would then have to find something else to do with the 4 billion hours a day I spend lurking on this board waiting for spring.

Usually when apple farmers find a rotten tree in their orchard - totally incapable of producing any fruit - they cut it down.

Lets talk about practicalities for weekend warriors like myself.
I do not have the time to spend hours on dyno's optimising the performance of my engine. Yes some of the performance gains may be able to gained through this process - but it is time consuming and requires constant maintenance. An easier, low cost path for me was to replace the authority chip in my 86 with Steve's chip. The difference in drive-ability and feel was amazing. Steve's chip has provided a low cost, simple, no maintenance upgrade path in which I am extremely happy. Loren, just because your opinion differs it doesn't mean that you have to continue to be such an objectionable A$$.

Uhh... how about the stuff in Ding Dongs, then? Is that OK? Or how about deep fried Twinkies - wouldn't that kill the mad cow?
I don't really eat that crap anyway - I'm currently a South Beach diet guy. But thanks for the heads-up! BTW, I like your signature! My wife's motto is "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing".

I wonder if the "wheel of death" vending machine can be chipped to advance the carousel around quicker so I can get to the twinkies package faster...
That would make me FEEL good.

You just DON'T drive down the street and watch an AFR indicator and then
reprogram a DME chip. To program properly you must data log ALL the variables; temp, RPM, air flow meter, timing, AFR, & engine load which is the most critical. You must know all of these to determine where on the three dimensional fuel & ignition maps you have a problem and where on these maps you must make changes. Furthermore, you must correlate measured torque, e.g. from a dyno run, to a variable such the AFM to have an idea of where you are on the torque curve when maps changes must be made. Many of you know that the race car telemetry systems provide the pit crews with many variables as the race car makes test runs. When the car comes in, the new set of fuel and ignition maps based on ALL the variables monitored can be downloaded to the control units. It's not an easy task without the proper equipment. To do it properly as the OEMs probably do, you need an EPROM emulator to run real-time with the fuel injection system. Using this you can update maps changes "on the fly" via a PC interface to emulator without having to reprogram the EPROM each time. All this is best done on a dyno and not while driving around your block.

Loren:
Finally....credible, understandable and logical dialogue...absent any emotion. Thank you.... Question, then: From your last post....how is this done using inertial dyno's...or does it matter? Otherwise, it seems you'd need a brake- loaded or other type of dyno that can tolerate driving along different simulated "load" patterns. Advice, please... ---Wil Ferch

Perhaps some of you may have forgotten some of the many dyno runs and data that we have performed quite a while ago that has accompanied our research and other methods of final tuning Edit: Oh, and if some of you read my post, you would have seen that a laptop was interfaced into the DME, and new chips were never burned throughout all the changes:

Steve, I'm only 23, dont know a whole lot about the subject, and didn't fully understand your first two posts... but the beauty is... i can read them again and again, and ask questions, untill i do understand them. Plus you have not gotten tangled up inthe emotions of others and only stated the facts that you have learned throught your research. This reminds me of a wise man who lived long ago, i think his name was So Crates... So when the time comes to put a 3.2L Carrera into my 9146gt (Oh lord, grant me a 6 soon), I ask you this in the mean time...
I wish to also put on a mass air flow sensor, like on an LH-Jetronic system (which i think i read you have) from autothority, would your chips need to be any different? Does the heated air flow meater differ to the computer than the stock vain style? Do you have a recommendation for a different heated sensor than Autothorities? Thank you, Don.
