To buy a Porsche on Ebay is crazy, especially a 993 with all their engine
problems. The same goes for a 996 (They have other problems). As a
matter of fact, why would anyone ever buy any Porsche on Ebay? There's
enough problems buying things other than cars on Ebay.

I bought both my Porsches using eBay without a hitch. Buying a used car is risky no matter what the venue, and eBay has more selection than many and most auctions have more info and pictures than you'll find in a Panorama, Autotrader, or Cars.com ad. Ask good questions, get a PPI, check their feedback, you'll be fine. Only place I'd trust more is this board - especially since you can review the seller's old posts to see what problems he's had or what upgrades he's installed.

I love 993s so much. I wish I would have just bought one instead of the 996 I bought. I would probably still be driving it if I had. Instead I went down the long road of regret with the 996 and then selling it, then ultimately buying my current Carrera. Don't get me wrong, I truely love the Carrera and will never get rid of it even if I get a 993, but if I had only done what I wanted in the first place. Sorry to vent and steal the thread...

Why buy a Porsche from a dealer?

Why buy a Porsche from a classified ad?

Why buy a Porsche from an individual?

Why buy a Porsche from a PCA member?

Why buy a Porsche from a Pelicanite?

Why buy a Porsche from eBay?

Why buy a Porsche?

Has pure ignorance reached its limit here?

I am dumbfounded.

Sigh...

BR,

Kurt

If I had the money kicking around, I would have a bay area pelican take a look, get a PPI, and then fly up and drive it back home. As said above, an eBay car is no better or worse than from any other source. You perform due diligence, roll the dice, and drive the car. It will be interesting to see what it goes for, as it appears to be a very nice and well sorted low miles C4.

The 993 is great looking and lots of power, but who needs the headaches.
Are you guys aware of the late model problems? Read some of the posts
on Rennlist.

Hey jim, how are your valve guides holding up? How many quarts per mile oil?
Try and watch that temp gauge in stop and go driving. Maybe keep the A.C. off
to keep the temp down. Are lifters a little noisy in the morning? Do the neighbors
think you've just bought a diesel?

Before I bid, I need to see the car first. Is that to unreasonable?

See all the hassles I've avoided by hangin' on to the same car for 29 years?

All pre-964 Porsches are the great ones! Porsche Engineering and not Marketing
designed those.

Loren, you won't see me disagree on that one! Who is Ebay Beta? I bought if off a guy who wanted a house down payment...
His last name was Newman...

So what is it, buying a car on eBay is crazy or all post '89 911s are troublesome?

Many wise folks here have stated that eBay is just another marketplace where the smart buyer has all the same tools (PPI, inspection by a trusted party, etc.) available as any other marketplace.

Now, as you back peddle on your original silly statement about eBay, you come up with more silliness of "late model problems" and dig yourself deeper into a hole, that by now, you must be quite familiar with.

Of course late model cars have some problems, as has probably every iteration of 911 motor ever developed . . . or any motor ever developed for that matter.

Your statements are clumsy and lack focus and direction . . . and fail the factual basis you so espouse.

Have fun!

Dream on Kurt about both late model Porsche cars and buying on Ebay.
Only the naive get sucked into both! Visit a few dealers and talk to the
techs.

And what are you driving these days, Kurt? Are you one of those guys
who biggest concern is what type of shift knob to buy for your car?

Kurt...what kind of shift knob do you have? I am looking for one that will cure all the faults with my 993 motor....oh wait, I have not had any!
Kurt is correct...Loren you really should have facts before you post info like this.

Loren:

Once again, personal attacks will not save you from the hole you find yourself in.

I, and many others, have made quite reasonable and thoughtful posts on the subject of eBay ("just another marketplace") and Porsche motors ("all motors have their weaknesses").

One is in trouble when simple and clear reason escapes one's judgment.

BR,

Kurt

H.D.:

While I am somewhat ashamed to admit it, I have fashioned an eRam unit into a quite functional shift knob. I use a Cool Collar as a lock-out and a cup-holder to keep the shifter centered.

It is a clumsy looking unit, but the installation is clean.

Cheers!

Kurt
