Crazy idea talking with friends this morning

Don't shoot me or banish me from the forum for this, but I was talking with my friends this morning and we were bsing about car projects and somehow we came up with this project.

Find a good condition long hood roller and adapt a Subaru STI 2.5l engine to it. Has anyone done something like this? That engine puts out 300hp stock and can easily be modded to put out 400+hp. Yea I know its no different than shoving a v8 or any other waterpumper in there but at least it's a boxer engine right? I still have my original porsche so this would just be that bastard step child.

It's not a bad idea, if you're alright with a water-pumper. Since it's mostly a personal opinion question, I'll let you know what I think -- Subaru makes a good engine. They're no cheaper to operate on than Porsche engines, and not (in my limited experience) all that much more reliable. It has just as low of a COG, and operates just about as efficiently. It's really a toss-up, in my book. If the extra power is worth it to you, and the project would be fun, and you have the funding, go for it.

End soap-box rant, and I'm $.02 poorer, for what that's worth. One other note -- try a search on this board for "subaru." Might return something of value. Good luck to ya, let us know what you decide.

The Suby flat four actually sits a bit higher in the car than a 911 motor, probably due to the sump.

There are two Subaru turbo engines on ebay right now. One has a buy it now at $850.00 and the other is $1250.00. Very tempting at that price.

So a Subaru turbo is ok to put into a 911, but a chevy is no no? not trying to hijack the link, but i dont get the forum sometimes. if someone wants a alternative to a power plant other then porsche, its a bastard and not a real porsche. I am not for chevys engines in 911's, but some other sort like the Subaru sounds interesting to me

I just think it sounded interesting and the overall cost vs a 3.6 would probably be much much lower, but the performance would be there. No doubt this would be a bastard in the worst way but it would probably be a fast bastard!!

Its been done in Germany, a reproduction speedster builder has put that engine in a repro speedster with reportedly very good results.

Do you know if any of the project was documented? If so any links. The more I think about it the more I want to do it. I really want a long hood and this would be a pretty cool project.

There you go. The Mitsu 4G63 2.0L turbo is a pretty durable motor which has been around a long time. They've been tweaking that motor for years. Kinda like GM's 3800 V6 in the sense that the motor has proven to be tried and true for their applications over a long period of time. The 4G63 is the motor that's powered all those turbo Eclipses, Galants, Lancers, ........ Currently running 280 hp stock in the now US available Lancer Evo (Evolution VIII I believe).

From what I understand, it doesn't take much to get these motors to 400hp just like the Subaru motor mentioned above. They just need to breathe more. Upgraded exhausts with free flowing intakes and quicker turbos makes those little cars (which are kinda heavy at 3300+ lbs w/out driver) scoot pretty good. Something like $1200 bucks with my labor will get my Laser pushing 300hp. That's with the stock TD05H turbo. Now that's bang for your buck.

The 4G63 has crank-walk problems when you start upping the boost, but it's cheap and readily available so if you blow it up getting another one won't be that big of a deal. I'd like to see a Scooby engine in a long-hood 912, I think that would be a pretty fun car and with a 3-speed built automatic it would make a good care to street-race/hustle people with. A '74-77 911S would also be interesting with an LS1/LS6, again with a built automatic for drag racing.

It used to be that the alternative was a Chevy V8, and it was always kind of an awkward fit, conceptually. But I think as engine technology continues to improve (read: more reliable, lighter powerplants, at lower prices), this idea is going to get more popular.

Is it a good thing? I don't know. In some respects, horsepower is horsepower, so long at the torque curve is acceptable and the weight distribution is all right.
