Heheh, the 935 anywhere can be a real beast.

And most of them except the AWD models are a pain through most of the alps.

Awesome, hopefully we'll be able to build this up to support several people on multiple servers.

The link that I provided to ncops prior to this page has a client where you can "post" your game IP (if no NAT is involved) to a server. All the others need is the same client so they can look the list of current servers. It's a really small download, and might help if we get more people involved. It'll keep this thread from growing indefinitely.

Well I tried and tried to get the game to work with the 3.5 patch installed but it would not work. I followed the instructions word for word six times. Each time the same thing would happen. I would double click the .exe file and the application would open. It would open right to the 'loading' screen and would freeze right there, basically shutting down my whole system. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get this to work. I have XP. I was able to get onto steve's server, but when he launched the game I'd just sit lost in cyber space. Any ideas?

I had to rename the gimme.dll for it to run w/ xp but I can't connect peer to peer either.

Quote:
If you have deleted gimme.dll, you can under some circumstances be unable to connect to EA's servers and Peer to Peer TCP/IP servers.
I'm sure it's all in the NFS5 software, I'll keep messing w/ it but it's not looking good.

ryan,

this could be a solution, albeit a little "invasive", but you may be able to install a second operating system, such as Windows 2000 and then have the choice to boot into XP (damned XP) or Windows 2000.... assuming XP will allow such a thing.

i have both 2000 and 95 installed on my machine just in case i need to run some of my older dos based programs (3d studio max)... which are still near and dear to my heart.

when i start up in the morning the computer asks me which os i would like to boot up in...

Is that System Commander (or something like that)?

I don't know if I want to go there or not. Overall I've been really happy w/ XP, I'll check into it though, thanks.

The Compatibility Manger in XP was a great idea, but it works like crap.

I'm wondering if all this renaming file business & patch updates is causing more harm than good in the end. I got in to Steve's game with XP on my machine without fiddling with anything. ymmv?

ryan,

good question... which i can't answer.

when i installed 2000 on my computer it prompted me as to whether it was to replace the existing os (in my case 95) or not. once installed it allowed me to then chose the os on boot up. ... in other words it just kind of happened on its own without me really knowing what i was doing (or not doing).

this must be driving you nuts.

good luck.

Philip,

I had the same problem as you way back (program freezing during load) and ended up having to limit the size of my swap file (virtual memory).

Check how much memory NFS uses when it's frozen. If it's just growing and growing, then limiting your virtual memory should fix it and get you going.

I my search for upgrades, web servers, etc., I had read in a few places that v3.5 was required for online gaming & peer2peer, I guess you have proved that it’s not.

NFS5 Worked fine on my XP system for weeks then the Porsche.exe would no longer run. Uninstall, Install, Reinstall, Compatibility Mgr, nothin’. I installed v3.5 and it would get stuck in loading. Renamed gimme.dll and it runs great, but no P2P.

Then I tried reinstalling NFS5 and renaming gimme.dll w/o installing v3.5 but it still wouldn’t run for me. I guess every system is different, I wish they would come out w/ a new game to replace PU that would be more compatible w/ XP, anybody want a wish sandwich?

I have the patch, generally the patches improve performance or fix problems in the code, so patches are usually good.

I am running on XP Pro with the gimmee.dll, but from what I understand some people cannot get the game to run at all if that file exists, not sure why. The root of some of the problems appears to be that the game is so old that it doesn't run consistently under XP.

OK, let me admit how much I don’t know.

How do I change my virtual memory? v3.5 locks up on load w/ the gimmee.dll file, maybe changing the virtual memory will work for me.

Here's how to do it in win2k:

1. click system in the control panel.
2. Go to the advanced tab
3. Click on Performance options
4. Click on the Change button in the Virtual memory area
5. Now change the initial and maximums sizes to whatever you want and click the Set button. (Mine is set to max 250 Mb (with 384 Mb RAM). This works for me in Win2k.

I'm running XP and the NFSV3.5 patch, with a dial up modem and I can connect onto Steve's and Lee's games' everytime. However, whenever I enter Osidak's IP, I can never connect. It is really strange since Andrew(Ubiquity0) logged on and was racing without the patch.

okay, calling all computer geeks. How do I tell what ports to open in my router to set up to serve nfspu? I'm ready to play.

TIA
