How about a "blow tube" hooked up to the engine. It would be at least as effective as the E-RAM

I had been pondering this problem for some time , and a few months back I saw an article in that English magazine [cant remember the name] which featured a RS Replica with a Russian
Aircraft clock installed in that spot. Those clocks are magnificent-- 8-day wind up, standard fitting in all Soviet aeroplanes. They sell on E-bay and I intend to get one if they dont run out. Somebody might be able to scan the pic and post it. Bob |
If the boost gauge I just ordered fits in the hole I might be willin to part with my clock, it still wurks ;)

Don't know about over there, but I replaced the mechanism inside mine with a brand new item for about $AUD80 (say $USD60). The same mechanism is used in most family (GM and Ford) cars here. Mind you I was quoted over $500 ($USD380) by my local Porsche Dealer for an original replacement item.

My clock would only run when the engine was running. Made a great hour meter. Had it out several times trying to find out why it did this, everything had power, but it would only run with the engine running. Knew exactly to the min how many hours were put on engine each time it was started, set it at 12 then start, when I shut it down, all I had to do was look at the time and see how long I had it running. Got old after a while, I put a good used one in.

Wonder if you could take an old fuel / oil temp gauge, re-work it for cht/ alt. Might be worth a call to North Holywood Spedo. |
Heres a sample of the russian clock--they reckon about 3" dia.
This one is new but its a bit too pricy I think. Plenty of others tho. |

In all seriousness, for a street car? Especially one in which you don't care about originality? Voltmeter. Hands down the most useful gauge, and a gauge I feel Porsche should have put in as standard equipment.

My 81 sc doesnt have a second hand but has a hand u can set as a timer. Keeps perfect time. Also have a voltmeter which is very useful. It showed no alternator long before the light did.
