I've been collecting parts for 2 years now and looking at early tubs for the last 6 months to fulfill the dream of building a lightweight RS clone track car and learning to race. Bought a 71T off Ebay from someone who clearly had no idea of what rust is, second tub was rustfree and excellent but sadly damaged in transit.

3rd time a charm? Very special thanks to Mark Hald for letting me borrow his trailer in the Boston to DE to Boston jaunt. And thanks to James Achard, build partner extraordinaire for the fine headquarters over the next few months.

William, motor is an 84 3.2 with a 915 attached.

Kemo, don't worry about pics, there will be plenty. I am working on getting Excellence and any other men's magazine from Esquire to Maxim to pick up the story: "Two guys build a track car on a budget." The entire project will be fully documented.

Can't wait to cut the quarters off and bond on the SC plastic quarters.

Hi Ali,

there is no shortage of work here! I'd love to get your help in any way you can. There will be many weekends of fun. I'll be up again next Saturday for final tub pictures and then it's all about cutting quarters off, getting the dash out and aircraft stripper getting this thing down to bare metal as best we can.

there is virtually no rust on this 73 tub. front pan, rockers and door jams have been done (surprisingly good job). the rear deck corners and battery boxes which are normally gone, are factory new, rest of car (longitudinals, floor, etc.) is excellent.

how is your project going? did you go with tubing in place of your rear deck?

Its rolling around. The whole car has basically been POR15'ed and Im going to try my hand at the body work. I may need to buy a section from your passenger side quarter whenever you cut it off. I'll send you a PM

The rear seating and speaker shelf area will be done next week. No more seats, and everything is aluminum. I had everything cut and fit in 18ga galvanized sheet stock, but decided to go back and re-do it in Aluminum. The whole thing will be removable for whenever Restoration Design starts making the new sections or I find a donor car drill the section out of.

Yes, this is definitely an "in the spirit of the R and RS cars" project. Here's the plan as of right now, mostly dictated by what deals I could find here on Pelican:
Total plastic RS rear bodywork, R rear lights

Front R fenders with Early Audi A4 side flasher lights for both
front turn signals and driving lights

S front bumper with homemade splitter

Lexan throughout

Full cage tied into suspension pick-ups

Carrera F/R suspension with as many of Chuck Morelands goodies as I can get (want to buy an iPaq?), 23/31 bars

Turbo brakes

3.2 with 915, with a tuned DTA fuel management system

Heavy old 7x9x16 BBS wheels

I've been clicking my heels, no go on KS for the moment.

Sweet Christ man, if this is your "learning to race" car, what are you going to graduate to? Porsche Cup? To put it mildly, that sounds, ahem, awesome. Hell, if you're going this far, why not just go with all carbon fiber stuff, it's only money after all. That sounds like a nice, and creative mix of stuff, the world has enough RS replicas, I like to see people put their own personal touch on things, kind of like Jack's car. Lots of pics will be required.
