How to use an OBDII diagnostic port in a 3.6 transplant.

This is the setup as described by my mechanic who hooked it up. It is an OBDII diagnostic port hooked up to a 1997 993 Euro-Varioram (OBDI). It is providing good DME data.

Disclaimer: I did not do this work myself. As previously stated, I do not understand electrons and distrust those who do.

OBDII Wiring to Control Unit

1 #15 key hot
2 Not used
3 ABS. Not used
4 #31 Ground
5 #31 Ground
6 Not used
7 K lead pin 55 Control Unit
8 Not used
9 Engine speed signal pin 6 Control unit.
10 Not used
11 Knock control signal pin 50 Control Unit.
12 Not used
13 Speedometer signal. Not used.
14 Not used
15 L Lead pin 13 Control Unit
16 Hot to tester. Power from DME relay.

P.S. The car is running beautifully. Unbelievable power. The engine is so smooth. The new exhaust is pure music. I'm still in love.

Moses,

YOU ARE THE MAN!!

Now for the questions (it's me, you know there are always lot's of questions)

Is your mechanic using an off the shelf OBDII diagnostic scan tool / reader?

Is he getting "live" running data only (I suspect YES) or can he also retrieve stored data (codes)?

Are you still running the Cyntex chip?

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's a regular off-the-shelf reader. It gets live data and I think it retrieves stored data too.

I'm still running a Cyntex chip. Idle is steady as a rock. May switch to the "NoBadDays" dual chip when they have one for my motor.

Have fun!

This looks like the information that everyone needs. Do you still need me to get details from my mechanic on what he did to get the port running? I'll assume no, unless it's specifically requested. Great job, Moses!

It would be great to set something like this up. Not sure if the wiring is the same on my '91 though.

Any idea where he got the connector that hooks up to the "off the shelf" OBII scan tool?

Moses,

Electronics ? Trust me.

Uwe Ross makes a good scan tool and accessories for OBD, check them out here and get other info:

www.ross-tech.com

The OBD software product is VAG-COM, I only use it for my '91 200 quattros but you can check compatibility on the web site.

I thought 993's were OBDII. Is there a difference in Euro's?

The Euro-993's are OBDI. In part, that's why they are more expensive.

Also, 1995 US 993's (non-varioram) are OBDI. 1996+ US cars are OBDII.

Moses, So then you have in fact interfaced the OBII port with the OBDI system. This could be great news for the 964 community.

There are several OBD1 readers that are coming to market as we speak(post?) some use proprietary reader hardware and some are PDA based. It looks like OBD1 wil have the same access as the current OBD2 readers.

I hope that there is a way for us OBDI people to scan our codes
too. I have a 95 993 3.6 and would like to take a look at my
running and stored codes too. Keep the updates coming

This is the way. My '97 motor is OBDI. I get readings on a regular OBDII machine.

Has anyone tried Moses recommendatioon for the OBDII diagnostic port wiring? I also have a 1997 993 Euro-varioram engine in my car (´76S) and would like to install a diagnostic port for a regular OBDII reader.

Thanks

Mario

Don't mean to jack your thread, how much did the 3.6 setup cost you?

mmasse,

I followed Moses's set up and wired up the OBDII connector to my Euro OBD I 993 non-vario motor. I tried a generic OBD II scanner and it would not link up but it will work with a Bosch Hammer scan tool with no problem. I believe I wrote down the color codes for the wires you need to hook up to the 16 pin connector should you need them.

code7rpd,

Please, if you have them send those to me.

I am not sure I am following you on the 16pin connector, if I recall correctly I only have a large and a small 14pin connector on my wire harness. Is this correct?

Thanks
