Window regulator?
With the weather getting warmer I decided to try to fix my driver's side window that has been "slipping" while cranking. I got everything apart but I can’t figure out how to get the pivot pin out. I must be missing something obvious here. I would appreciate any assistance on how to get the pivot pin out of the window regulator.

Turn the drive shaft until the tension in the spiral spring is minimized; pry off the spiral spring (note how it was arranged for reinstallation). Turn the drive shaft until the linkages expose the back side of the pivot pin; it will be upset on the back side for retention. Grind away the upset portion of the old pivot pin and drive it out towards the front side. Install new pivot pin by driving it in place; then tack weld the back side. I have also seen these mechanically upset to retain but welding is more secure. There are two different forms of the pivot pin: with the flats on the shoulders and the spring tang slot either parallel or normal to each other; be sure you obtain the right replacement part. One can only tell by looking at what you have, there are not part numbers as the new steel pivot pins are not official Porsche replacement parts. Reinstall the spiral spring. Be sure and clean off the old grease and dirt on the sector gear and drive pinion and relubricate. It is also worthwhile to take apart (held together by small retaining rings; remove by pushing sideways with a small screwdriver) and clean the spring loaded plastic sliders at the end of the linkage arms. Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim,
I just found this posting. Got a question. I will be doing this replacement but since the parts had failed, I am unable to tell which position the regulator should be in for the spring to be relaxed. I would think that the spring would be most relaxed when the window is up and gets progressively tighter. This way, the spring would help "push" the glass up (against gravity) when you go to roll the window up. Does that make sense?

Yes. That is how it works. To put the spring back on is the toughest part of this job. I used fishing line. I clamped the regulator to a table at the pivot (big c-clamp or large vise grips) hook one end of spring on tab , make a loop out of the fishing line(i use line crimps but you can tie it) pull until the other spring tab is past hook on regulator and let go. Cut the line and pull from under the spring. I use 300 lb leader material mainly because I have a lot of it for fishing. If you use lower test line you can also double or triple wrap it. Good Luck. I hope this helps.

Related Query:
If you have all the parts out (for painting) what inspections should you do to the window parts? Already done: 1. teeth on gear look fine 2. will put new lube on gears and joints (any thoughts on what is best and commonly available?) 3. the nylon blocks look OK - they have some ships taken out of the shoulders but seem OK or maybe the nylon blocks should just be replaced as a matter of course?
