What's your opinion on buying used track wheels?

Found some that are cosmetically challenged but were used on the track--they are 993 cups. I would use them for track duty as well for DE's (no serious club racing yet)--thoughts? TIA

If you're going to use them for the same purpose then I say "Go for it!" For street use, I would hold out for a next set. They're easy enough to find nowadays.

Are these Factory Porsche wheels or the 993 replicas made by Mille Miglia?

If replicas:

1. Make sure they're straight. Mine were bent bigtime. Three of the four wheels had big bends on the rim edges due to hard impacts. So check with the seller if the wheels have long strips of wheel weights on them. If so, I would not buy them.

2. They are HEAVY.

If factory wheels:

They'll need spacers for a pre-964 car. Check to make sure non-factory spacers are allowed.

My buddy Mark (kiwior) has a good set of factory wheels from his '95 993 cab. that he's selling. Nice wheels, but tires could use replacing as the rears are pretty much done.

What Kevin said

For track use only Fuchs or comparably well made wheels are wanted.

MMs and track do not mix well

Spacers are not desireable either.

Buying used race wheels is OK.

Whatever you do, have them carefully inspected for damage, cracks, and trueness. Have the seller send them to an independent party (shop) for inspection. The best outcome is they are OK. The second best is you only pay for inspection and they are returned. The worst is you buy them without inspection, there is something wrong, and you are stuck.

This is true for any wheel.

Best,
Grady
