Are Potenza tires decent for an 85 Carrera?

I need to get new tires for my (new to me ) Porsche

I was thinking of getting the Potenza RE950 (H rating)
Or Potenza RE730 (Z Rated)

Anyone have any experience with these or comments on other options for around the same price?

(reason I am concidering these is because I can get them at Costco)

The Bridgestone 730's are the only tire I've hated enough to throw away after a year. While Bridgestone makes some good tires (S-03) the quality of the 730's I got was very poor. All of them were significantly out of round. They became unbearably noisy after a short time. I suspect that they were made by Firestone (owned by Bridgestone).

One man's trash............
I like my 730's. No problems. Not noisy (yet?). I've got 5k miles on them so far. Wearing well too.
For the price (i paid about $100.each), it's treated me well.
Sure there are 'better' tires out there, eg S-03, Yok AVS Sport, etc, but not for $100.ea

They changed the 730 (rev II or something like that) probably to address the noise complaints. I don't see the 730 listed on Tire Rack's web site anymore so maybe it has been discontinued. A couple friends went with the Sumotoma HTRZ (something like that) and like them.

That's correct. They changed to RE750's. I have them on my car and love them. Although, their 245's seem to be like other company's 225's. They looked stretched on my 9's, but look great on my 8's, even though everybody elses 245's look best on 9's.

So, if you're thinking about going with them and have 7's and 8's I would recomend 205 55 and 245 45. If you have 9's I'd try another brand or see if they make 255 or 265's.

If you want to see what I'm speaking about in my above post, check out the pics in this thread. It's my car with the same Potenzas. Fronts are both 7's, but the rears went from 9's (top photo) to 8's bottom photo.

I think it's because they have the rim protector (beed of rubber that sticks out slightly so you don't get curb rash on your beautiful Fuchs).

Wow, Ididn't hink I'd read about Sumotoma on this forum. I put the HR200s on my SL and they are fantastic. Especially at $43 a pop. As for the Porsche....I'm still a Pirelli guy.

The S-03's have the same problem - the 16" 245's are barely wider than the 225's and nowhere near what the Tire Rack's dimension sheet lists. If they didn't have a slightly different tread I would swear they were 225's that were mislabled.

I like my 750's, but have heard of the noise problems. I have 7's and9's and never noticed the stretch factor until these photos. I wonder if other brands look stretched?

For the same kind of money spent on the RE730, 750 or whatever 7-Bridgestone, you can get a stickier, higher performing tire in the Kumho Ecsta MX. The MX has a lower UTQG rating of 220 versus 340 for the 750. But take that with a grain of salt because the #'s don't always apply from tire to tire. Especially between different manufacturers. The tread depth on the MX is a little shallower at 9/32nds, versus the standard 10/32nds for the 750. The shallower tread gives a slightly more stable tire from the get go.

MX is a bit cheaper too. I have the MX and think they're a great tire. Said to be one of the better bang-for-your-buck tires out there. Problem is, there's only two 16 inch sizes available. The Porsche standard 205/55 and 225/50 is all they make in 16's.

Another that falls in the same price range is the Yoko AVS ES100. This one's been discussed alot on the tech forum. Do a search and see what you find?

I have the 730 potenzas in 225/55/R16 on my daily driver (non porsche) and they were really noisy for the first year. Two years and 18k miles later, they're quieter.

Looks nice, but a 200 rating. Might wear out too fast.

Are you going to be A/Xing or doing any DE's or is a daily driver, garage queen?

Tires...must be a million posts on this. I just replaced my Dunlop 8000s with the Kumho 712s, also looked at Yokohama AVS ES100s. Mine is a daily driver, street only, spirited rides on the freeway/Hill country. So far so good, but saving final decision until I get a good rain to drive in. People rave about the Yokohamas and traction, but I was concerned about wear, plus as everyone says...you can't beat the price on the Kumhos.

What about Dunlop Sport 9000's? I love mine and I've had them over a year and they stick to the road and aren't too noisy...

I don't know what they did to the Potenzas since the 730's, but I highly recommend the 750's. I have at least 15K of "spirited" miles on mine, and they still look new. Treadwear is phenominal. Ask "unfixed" how they grip in the turns. He was my navigator for a recent Mines Road run in the Bay Area. It will take quite a tire to keep me from buying these again.

Now you're making me rethink my decision. I have 7s & 9s 205/55-16 245/45-16 with S-02s that have about 2k miles left on them. I was almost convinced of going with S-03s. Should i go with something else?
