i drove the diablo once... and it scared me
it's fine on a straight line, on a wide and empty road...
corners on the other hand...

i think that guy got airborn on one or two wheels, freaked out and slammed his brakes while his wheels were't on the ground...
which is bad , cause when they land ... the car goes byebye

You guys are a tough audience.

I just hope the driver walked away ok. Serves as a reminder to me to stay within my limits. At this point in my DE participation, my car's ability still far exceeds my skills.

I agree Svandamme with the airborne comment. Looks like the transition over the top of the hill onto the downhill section caused control to be lost; and from the skid marks, it doesn't look like this car was the first to try this shortcut.

It doesn't matter how much money or how few brains you have; that has got to be embarrassing.

Still it's a beautiful piece of machinery. What a shame.

Any one here actually driven Road Atlanta?

He's not the first one to visit that area, nor will he be the last.

Coming soon to Ebay: EZ Fixer Diablo, Buy this Lambo with minor "door dings" to the side, fix it yourself and save a ton! Just a few dents, previous owner does not want his car, as it's not perfect anymore. How often are there ads that say that?

It certainly looks like more money than brains.
Who is it that has the motto "you didn't crash, you just ran out of talent"?

If this happens from time to time on this track then why don't they extend or remove the concrete barrier allowing the car to slide to a stop?

A lot of money for Porsche phone dials and Corvette tail lights! (just kidding)
Sad for such a machine to end up like that.

All those skid marks, and no tire wall in front of the concrete. I don't know the track, but can someone tell me why?

Road Atlanta is my home track. I've asked myself Jack's question above many times, and in a few other places on the track also (actually, I think there are tires there now...this is an old incident). This incident is at turn 12 and I'll be honest....I'm having a hard time trying to rationalize how someone could do what this guy did (assuming this wasn't his first lap ever around the track). He was off track almost immediately after coming under the bridge (looks like he's way too far to the left...probably got airborne) and before the turn-in for 12 which is a long off-camber sweeper going downhill. I guess if he had immense power and went WOT coming under that bridge (which is blind...you feel like you're driving off the end of the Earth) I suppose he could have panicked when he crested the hill and realized the the road curves to the right. Most people who are familiar with the track will short shift to 4th at the crest and ease into the throttle coming through the off-camber apex to WOT as you enter the front straight.

It's not a forgiving track (not much runoff room) but it's an absolute blast to run. Rumor has it that all the cement walls were some kind of requirement for spectator safety for sanctioned events (Petit LeMans, etc). I have to say that I love the track...moreso that Barber Motorsports Park. It's faster and more exciting in my opinion. Back there again next weekend with the BMW club. I hope to give the bimmers new respect for rickety old 3.2 Carrera's (3.6 will remain a secret).

There are very few places with "safe" run of areas at R.A. Only the slow speed corners have gravel traps or run off room. All the high speed corners have walls/armco or dirt embankments. Go figure. This turn is a high speed, off camber, downhill turn (@85m.p.h. and accellerating) and look at the top of the picture, you have about 5 feet of grass before the wall. This section used to be much worse before they redid the track. The armco/tire wall used to be right at the edge of the track, and countless cars have met their demise there. As you can tell by all of the other skid marks, it still claims victims, although not near as much anymore since you are going under the bridge much slower than before.

I agree with Jack and question why there is no tire wall in an area that obviously has it's share of off track visits. I definitely don't understand grass in this run off area where you'd like to be able to scrub off some speed, but I've got a question for some of you frequent track guys. What does a better job of slowing a car in a run off area, pavement or gravel? I know that gravel will bog a car down at lower speeds, but I've seen some high speed excursions where the car seems to just skip over the gravel with the wheels locked. Wouldn't pavement slow the car quicker assuming the wheels are still intact and brakes applied? I assume the gravel is also used as a kind of penalty for running off course, similar to a sandtrap in golf; but doesn't that put safety second?
