Armrest hinge with new door panels

I purchased new OE style AppBiz door panels. The panels seem very nice quality.

My problem is that the armrest hinge was mounted to the original door card with hollow rivets. A screw then goes through the top rivet into the metal door.

The new panel cards have holes for mounting the hinge, but the holes are larger and more narrowly spaced than the originals. Regardless, I don't have a riveting tool to press new hollow rivets.

I spoke with Bob (at AppBiz). He said the hinges were never riveted/attached to the door card, and that mine were probably just stuck after X years of being in place. He said they are simply screwed into the door frame. He has -way- more experience, but mine are original, and most definitely not what he claims.

My question:
1. Has anyone else had the armrest hinge attached to the door card, in addition to screwed to the door frame?
2. If installing on a replacement panel, have you experienced a difference in size or spacing of the holes?
3. If you have hollow rivets (like mine), how did you re-attach them after removal?

Punch a new hole and use your original screws? I've also ground off the rivet flange to remove them and used whatever screws get a good grip.

Interesting. When I took my door apart, the armrest hinge was just screwed into the door with sheet metal screws. No hollow rivets. Since the screws weren’t really holding, I opened up the holes a bit and inserted 6mm rivnuts, then bolted the hinge to the door.

I was mostly interested if my config was a one-off, and if people try to reattach the hollow rivets to the new card, or ignore that.

Yes, I plan to use the original screw, and maybe add another through the lower rivet.
I had not thought of rivnuts. I kinda like that idea. Thanks.

Yes, hole spacing has changed over the years.

And yes, they were sometimes riveted to the door cardboard panel, without any rule that I can identify.
