MFI Gurus - Pump Help

In the course of swapping out throttle bodies I am having problems removing the fuel injection lines from the the top of the injection pump. The middle and aft driver's side connectors are stubborn little buggers and in attempting to loosen them ( a b&*!ch due to how close together they are) it appears the connector housing is also backing out. Any ideas on how to get a wrench in there? I got the passenger side swapped out relatively easy, but this one has me scratching my head. I have sprayed em with penetrating fluid for the night and will reattack tomorrow.

thanks

Chris,

If you run out of options, take the pump off with lines still attached and get it somewhere warm. Drain the oil and gas and set the pump upside down. The penetrating oil will follow the threads now. Light tapping with a small brass hammer will help.
Also, once you have it off, you can dismantle the clamps that hold the pipes and snake a box-end wrench up to the pump fittings. Using two wrenches against each other works wonders.

Best,
Grady

BTW, it is 60F now (8:00 AM) with 80 expected this afternoon. We are going to the track at lunch. Rub Rub. Of course this time last year we had 30”+ of snow.

Chris,

Something I forgot! Whenever you have the pump off and drain the oil, refill with fresh oil via the side cover or oil return hose. The restriction in the pressure oil line won’t fill it quickly.
Also now is the time to check the Gilmer belt and pulleys. Before you undo the pump, check to see if it was timed properly.

Best,
Grady

Thanks Grady, thank goodness that I did not have to go that route. I removed the top of the air intake housing and that gave me better access to get the 19mm wrench to the lower locknut and then use the 17mm to loosen the fuel line nut. Lines are OUT!! I already have loosened the outboard 3 nuts on the throttle bodies, but will need a wuick trip to Sears to get a 1/4" swiveling 12mm and a middle of the raod extension to get at the inboard ones.

This is a heck of a lot harder than I had thought, no wonder the local wrench wanted my left arm to do the swap.
