My 930 pulls better 50-80 times than a Ferrari 360 Modena (6-speed manual)! I tested both a few months ago with an Escort G-TIMER GT2 instrument.

Very few cars can out-accelerate a 930 under boost.

ZCat3,
yes, depends what gear the turbo is in, and if it is on boost or not. i thought when you said "high speed runs", i thought you meant "very" high speed , not 60mph roll-on
myself and a fellow in a mid-late 80's slant nose played around a bit on a drive last summer. I am not sure if he had any mods ( but i am sure it wasn't de-tuned ) We went through all kind of conditions, speeds, altitudes, etc.
the cars were quite evenly matched. if he rolled on the throttle when on boost, he'd pull on me. we were close until boost came on otherwise.
it was a very hot day...so that probably helped me.

I am not sure of his mpg, but i was very impressed with the 993. flogging the car hard, with miles and miles of 130-150+ mph, i probably got better fuel mileage than my SC at any speed

One thing that the cars have in common...they are both a lot of fun.
one big difference- it costs a LOT to make a 993 go a little faster, if you spend a lot on a Turbo, it will be a LOT faster!!

cheers,
Max

I think your SC needs a 3.6.

BTW, I got 14 mpg at Willow Springs.

I've driven both and own a 930. I agree with most here---as a daily driver, the 930 is pushing it (maybe that changes when you go to an '89, with its 5 speed hydraulic tranny and clutch--dunno).

The '97 993 I drove is an extremely competent car. But it left me cold, compared to a 930. And especially a modded 930.

The "trouble" is, every time I drive my 930 on the street, I'm struck by how much of a waste that is--these things were meant to be blasting down straights and oversteering with opposite lock through turns, not going to the store, sitting at traffic lights. In the former context, you don't miss the lack of "civility"; in fact, you enjoy it, becuase it keeps the weight down.

But I personally just could not drive my 930 every day to work. It would feel like a crime. And, with 500 hp to the wheels at 1 bar, it WOULD be a crime... .

So...if you've got another car to drive, and if you tend to be a tinkerer, and you have delusions of track granduer, the 930 simply cannot be beat. You may not be the fastest around that track, but you sure as hell will have the most exhausted adrenal glands.

You nailed it.

BTW, I hate driving my 930 to the store. Nothing is worse than stop-and-go traffic and signal lights when all you want to do is open it up...

Leland-

I was looking at these two options about three years ago. I drove both more than once. What do you like better, beautiful redheads or blondes? Well, I like both. Therein lies the dilemna. I will say, if I had a choice of either, and they were equal in condition, AND all maintenance was paid for by someone else, I'd go with a 930.

If I had the time, ability and desire to maintain them myself, I'd go with the 930.

If I had no time and less money to maintain. I'd go with a 993.

There is something about the sound and appeal of a Turbo when it kicks in. That Turbo lag is a REAL bummer though. If it's a lot of stop and go driving, that means a 993.

Don't believe what you hear about the difficulty of wrenching on 993's. They're not that tough. If you like to tinker, a 993 will disappoint, as they are very reliable and still relatively young.

Hmmm... this thread couldn't have come at a worse time (I had been avoiding thinking about these things).

My wife had a baby on Thursday (our second). Time isn't what it used to be when I bought the 930. It is really fun to drive, but that poor car needs, and deserves, a lot of love.

I am thinking of selling the 930 and looking for a clean 993.

Thinking. Just thinking...

This guy also knows how to steer: he's won a couple of club championships, and has been runner-up countless times as a result of misfortune. He's had a lot of success in his 993, finishing 1st in his class last year with it as his weapon of choice.

He's selling the 993 because it's "boring". He says it's a capable car, but it's just not making the hair on the back of his neck stand up. I'm not sure it ever did, and neither is he.

Some food for thought.
Yeah but this guy you are talking about is also nudging 70. Maybe he needs viagra?

Victor,

It's more than likely the 620HP 934 spoiled him for life.

This question is like asking: Do you like blondes or brunets.

I’ll take one of each and thrown in a redhead too.

It’s got to be a 993 (will drive it more as reason). Now the hard part: coupe, convertible or Targa.

1998 Targa (had the roof bugs worked out), silver ext. and black int., or dark blue ext. and tan interior.

Until then, I will keep fighting time (and the elements) in my 1977 Targa.

The 930 is an outstanding car. From the beautiful fat lines, all the way down to the 917 derived brakes. Heck those brakes were used for Porsche's first outright Le Mans winner!!

Then again the 993 IS the last of the line. It is the very pinnacle of the 911 design many would consider. They handle better than any old 911 (open for debate ). Plus they have creature comforts that go along with all that finessed power.

Though I have much adoration for the 930, I'd love to have a 993 in my garage.

base 993 brakes are better than 930 brakes.

My 968 is very capable, very balanced, faster, and LESS fun than my SC.

Thus, I would rather have a 930 than a 993. But actually my SC makes me happy

This will get the ogles and stares if you park it next to a 993 - trust me I've done it.

Plus: it has made every passenger but one (current girlfriend...) do the "holy *****" scream thing the first time I've run to redline in 1st and 2nd gears on boost - this included quite a few "Oh yeah mate I've had me some fast cars in me day" types...

Everyone should have a 930 once - you can always get a 993 when you're old, that's my plan.

Let me throw my .2 into the ring. I really like the C2 Turbo's. More modern car, but still adhere's more to the classic 911 shape. On these widebody cars, the C2 bumpers look much more proportianate, and I actually like them better than 993's. (I never really fell for the quasi-flatnose of the 993)

They retain 2 wheel drive, and semi-trailing arms in the rear, so you can still throttle-steer them. The early 3.3's are mechanically identical to the 930 engine-wise, and even the Turbo 3.6 still used CIS. I think they are the last of the pure Turbo driving experience. A/C that works, ABS, stiffer chassis, and an absolute bargain right now.

The 993 TT is an awesome car, but I hate 4WD and toe-correcting rear suspension. I hate cars that are trying to undo "mistakes" they think I made. Why should I drive a car that can drive itself?

Well if your budget is 30k, a 993 is pretty much out of the question isn't it? I mean you see the odd car for close to that, but it's gonna have some issues, maybe serious ones. A 930 at that price will be close to mint, though it's older and will cost you a little more by and by, but I think it would be cheaper in the long run than a suspect 993.

Other than that I bet the pro/con tally is pretty even for both cars. I might be completely cracked though.
