Targa meets the Sawzall

I thought this would be an opportunity for some of you (and me) to see how the 911 is constructed. This is a '71 that was VERY poorly repaired and never made it back to service. I picked it up in Jan partially stripped, but with engine and trans. I cut the windshield frame and Targa bar before the pics here.

This is why is got cut up. The tub was realy wrinkled in a few critical places and was not square anymore.

Here's what's in the tunnel, left side.

Right side.

This should be in nostatic's thread about underbelly condensors, but here it is. Closer inspection shows it's trashed.

A view of what the longitudinal looks like under the door hinge and showing extra Targa bracing.

One last pic that wouldn't load. This is a section of the lonitudinal from about mid door.

BTW, I was able to verify that the splines on the rear torsion bar fixture would allow the bars to pass through. There is no center stop on this car, just continuous splines.

If you want any shots of anything specific, let me know. The dumpster is coming tomorrow at noon.

Then you needed to be here and see this POS up close and personal. The rear engine console was bent up about an inch and caved in all along the top next to the motor. And the front clip was the worst I've seen on any car, especially one that was supposedly repaired.

I had posted a pic of the damage a human body did to the pass side dash and knee brace a while back. That's all caved in too. The car was unsafe and a terrible mess. I did get a huge amount of small parts for my S car off this thing.

I don't feel sorry for the car, so much, as for the neighbors who got to listen to the Sawzall song for so long.

This is sort of like cadavers being used to teach medical students. It's good to get a look at what the insides are like.

Thanks, Milt!

Milt, it is men like you who I admire. You have old school know- how built upon years and years of hard work. You remind me of those guys in Orange County Chopper, Hot Rod, and Monster Garage. Keep up the good work, David

I would torch out the VIN plate and keep it on your shelf, "one that didn't make it."

Cool shot of the anatomy of the tunnel Can you identify:

Fuel Supply and Return Lines
Evaporative emissions lines (2)
Clutch cable housing
Throttle Cable Housing
Battery primary cable
Main wire harness
Parking Brake Cable
Heater Cable

There is only one man who can identify those things accurately, and also tell you how the locations changed from '64-'89. That would be Herr Kuntz, who has not been seen in these parts for some time...

Unfixed, about 30 min. Jack, I usually wait until one of the many gardeners shows up at one of the neighbors in close proximity. With all their commotion going on with the leaf blowers, etc., my noise is pretty well masked.

Did I mention I live under the Long Beach Airport flight path? Who gives a rat's behind! It's noisy here all day from 7AM to 10PM.

Shall we now refer to you as "Dr." Zeke?
Very cool, yet a little sad. At least mine is worth just that much more now.

Sad, but as long as we are learning from the cadaver - How about a picture of the spline mounts in the center of the torsion tube?

Does your demolition allow you to shed any light on the following?

targa questions - removing bits...

I doubt that I know as much as he's forgotten about Porsches.

Good times! It would have been a blast to have participated. Let us know if it comes up again.

The statements contained in the linked post are correct, welds all around.

Chuck, the car is gone, but there is nothing to see that can't be seen here. In other words, you are looking at the spline tube there in the rear halves where I cut down the middle of the tunnel. The spline tube is just that, a short 4-5" tube with continuous splines all the way thru and is simply welded to the outer tube. A rear torrsoin bar can be pushed thru.
