Thanks, Grady!

I just PM'ed Mike that I would be faxing the stuff you sent me when I get home from work. But that won't be for another 2 hours or so. It would also be a FAXed copy of a FAX, so possibly not very legible. Yous most likely would be best.

Also, thanks loads for all the help and advice you've given. If you're ever in the Atlanta area, be sure to look me up!

Randy

Randy,

Yes, we may come visit my cousin near Covington, GA this summer. He is the 5th generation owner of our family farm and has just added a horse barn operation. That is something my son (18 - the SCCA racer and PCA member) wants to get involved with during college.

According to Mapquest, it looks like you are a little more than an hour away. It would be fun to visit the 915 and swap 911 stories with you.

Best,
Grady

Well, I've been to the local Home Depot a few times today and have logged around 25 miles or so. I know that doesn't compare to a cruise through the North Georgia Mountains, it IS a start.

Shifting is a bit "tight" but I guess that's to be expected. It feels really good. It's great to be driving her again.

Figured I'd post a few pics for anyone interested...

Thanks again to everyone who helped and encouraged me through this project. Hope I can return the favor someday!

Randy

You da man!

Woohoo! It's A-L-I-V-E! Nice brother, good to see you're back in the saddle again. What an experience, huh? After a week or 2, she'll slide into gears again with no tightness at all. The amazing thing is that now you'll be able to downshift into 1st and 2nd gears at appropriate speeds. I never thought I'd say this, but once the tranny was rebuilt, she's now a PLEASURE to drive! I'm still not sure how often a rebuild is required, but I'll be on the lookout for the signs that the snycros are getting worn (grinding, etc). Be good, and, well, drive the snot outta her!

She sure is a lot more fun to drive. No worries about "missing" a shift or anything like that.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement, Matt! This has surely been one he!!uva learning experience. Hopefully, I'll be able to share the knowledge I've gained here with someone else.

Semper fi, Leatherneck!

Randy

I will be glad to help you share that knowledge, either later this year or early next year. Maybe when the new trans rebuild book comes out.
Glad you are back in it. Mike

Randy,

Randy,

I just read your thread, this is incredible! From a former Hospital Corpsman ('82-'91, 1st Med Bn, 3rd Med Bn) to a Marine, I say "way to go Devil Dog"!!!! Congratulations! Your well-documented project will help many people and give others the confidence to do their own repairs. You did a great job! Aren't these "Pelicans" great?!!

Yama, as soon as I come up with another project, I just may take you up on that offer. (Not that I'm hoping for anything else to break any time soon )

Mwbaum, thanks for the comments.

Art, Semper fi, brother. If what I documented here helps anybody else in any way, I'll feel honored. But, honestly, the Pelicans that provided the assistance deserve all the credit. They really did make this a pretty easy task.

Yes, indeed, Pelicans rock!!!

Ok, so months after the complete rebuild, how's the tranny shifting? Mine took a couple weeks or so to loosen up, but then it shifted like butter

Hey, Matt!

Thanks for asking! Well, it's been 2000 miles now and the tranny is still working like a dream. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to improve on things, but I plan to change out all the bushings in the shifter pretty soon, just because...!

Yes, sir...after a couple of weeks, it "loosened" up a bit, but I'm glad it hasn't loosened too much. It is always so much fun to drive now.

Sorry for not responding right away. I was out in Washington visiting with the wife's family all last week. While I was there, I took the opportunity to swing by John Walker's Workshop and was lucky enough to catch him there. What a super guy!

He spent the better part of an hour or so just talking with my father-in-law and me about cars. And strangely enough, most of the talk was NOT of Porsches. It seems JW not only knows P-Cars, but he's equally an expert on older classics. (Does his knowledge know no bounds???)

Anyway, if even a small fraction of his knowledge was transferred to me through our handshake, I'll have increased my knowledge 100 times over.

If I ever get out your way, Matt, I'll be sure to stop by and look you up. You were a lot of help!

Thanks,

Randy

Wow Randy, I just spent the last 2.5 hours reading this thread on the advise of Dan. Thanks for posting all the pics, you are an inspiration for me as I will be soon rebuilding my tranny. Well, I'd better go to bed now, I'll be looking forward to asking you some questions in the future, thanks.

Randy,

Your ladder is giving me the willies. Consider clamping or hooking it to the wall near the top before it undoes your hard work.

BTW great job and thread.
