1965 911 - More desirable or just another SWB?

1964 911s seem to be extremely rare. What about '65? I've been watching this one on ebay. Is a '65 more desirable because it's so early in 911 history or is it lumped in with the other swb cars?

I think that unless the numbers are extremely low -- like one of the first 100 or so made -- that it's just lumped in with the other SWB cars.

The one you linked to is bid at $10.3K at the moment, and that's SC money, so somebody wants it...

the 65s are cool.. painted dash, chrome cluster.. very nice, classic look.


the 67S is the most desireable swb though.

I think all quality early 911s, SWB and LWB, will see a continued increase in value. I'm always suspicious of ebay but that '65 does look like it has potential.

Well, the bidding has taken off on this one. I thought it was a good deal when it was hovering around $10K, but it's passed $14K now.

Personally I would more highly value a 65 assuming it is nearly original or has some sort of early racing history, but then there are plenty of other years that are worthy of extra value as well.

A 1964 911??? I don't beleive there is such a beast! Production did begin in September 1964 (235 cars built before the year end), but I'm pretty sure those were titled as 1965 models.

This is all a little bit confusing because Porsche is celebrating the 40th anniversery of the 911 this year (2004) and indicate that time frame as 1963-2003. Well, the world debut of the 911 was at Frankfort in Sept. 1963, so I guess that's where the 63 comes from, even tho cars were not sold until late 1964. So why didn't we celebrate the 40th birthday in 2003? Maybe we'll have three 40th parties - 63-03, 64-04, and 65-05! I'm so confused ..... -- Curt

The most confusing thing about the 40th birthday of the 911 was watching Porsche dealerships using the "event" to sell Cayennes.

At one time......the 1965 production year, vehicles with serial #'s between 300236-303390, (and including the 1964 cars) were bringing big $$ in Europe due to them being in a certain class for vintage rallying.


I don't know if this is still the case....but it was 2 years ago.....

...this is because, every time someone posts a cool ebay Porsche at Pelican...the bids jump up significantly.

Kurt: I think we're seeing a shill bidding war.

The car is getting much higher bidding than it should without extensive photo & other documentation.

And look at the engine lid: the '911' script is about 3" above where it should be.
