Question What is the max output of a stock alternator?

I’m curious what I could expect to be the maximum amperage output of a stock alternator (1976 3.0). I see there is an upgraded alternator available for $500 that puts out 95A.

Frostie,

Stock output was 980 Watts, 70 Amps.

If this 'upgrade' you are talking about does away with the external regulator, then I would recommend that you pass ... internal-regulated alternators have a very, very bad relibility record since 1982!!!

Max alternator ratings are never to be considered the continuous mode especially
under very hot ambient conditions. The alternator should be run at about 80% of
the max for a long term reliable operation. Also, the air cooled engine's heat adds
to the operating temp of the alternator because of its' location which further reduces
its' max output current to prevent diode failures.
