I replaced the ball cup, shift rod coupler and shift rod bushings on my 915. I adjusted the shift rod coupler according to Wayne’s 100 projects book and the tranny shifts into all gears and feels GREAT!
The only problem is the clutch slips in 1st gear. It engages fine in reverse but slips and the car stalls in 1st! The clutch worked great before I tinkered with the car, (clutch replaced at 77K car now has 85K). Could I have screwed up the clutch by replacing the bushings??? Wayne dosen't say anything about the clutch in project 37 (Shifting Improvements). Please Help, Alan Stark

None of the stuff you've done affects the clutch.
What exactly is happening? A slipping clutch doesn't cause the engine to stall...clutches usually slip in 3rd or higher when you try to accelerate.

Todd
That's what I was thinking, but I am new at p-cars and their repair. I replaced the bushings per Wayne's book. Reinstalled the coupler bushing and aligned it according to Wayne's instructions. When I shift into first and start to accelerate, the car stalls. Clutch feels like it is slipping (if I give it gas I can get it to go, but it is definately different). I had no problems prior to bushing replacement. I am stumped! Help Alan

Reinstall the shift coupler - You aren't lined up properly.
Remove and reinstall,. AFJuvat

The orientation of the shift rod coupler will definitely give you problems if installed the wrong way. I think there is a pretty good thread in this forum describing the proper way to install it.

Thanks Ed and AFJuvat--
I will readjust coupler, although I have done it numerous times and research the thread on the board. Alan

PS. You'll always know if the clutch is screwed up. Remember that sweet disgusting smell from you 65 chevy right before it had to be parked on the side of the highway. Ahhhhh, a fragrance we'll never forget, and one that's the same in all manual trannys.

I remember Westy--but my car was an Austin Healy 3000 and it was 1969. Could hardly smell the clutch over the exhaust smell!

Alan,
My bet is that your coupler is out of adjustment. It appears that you are more than likely in third and not first, that is why it is stalling and requires more effort to get moving. JM
