Top Dead Center (TDC) without fan?

I'd like to remove the fan strap to get it painted along with the fan housing and fan. The problem is I took off the fan and cant seem to turn the crank without the fan. Is there another way to get to TDC?
What's the procedure here?

I'd like to remove it tomorrow morning so I could take it down to the powder coaters before noon.

Thanks for the help!

There is at least one more way: remove the muffler and the associated pieces underneath blocking the pulley. Then turn the pulley until Z1 lines up with the split line of the case.

Yikes, well, I could just polish it a bit right on the engine too.

Nah - it's easy: Put it in a high gear, jack up one rear wheel and turn the engine over with the wheel. Either use the lugnut, or if that needs too much torque, take the wheel off and turn the axle at the big nut.

If you have LSD, jack up both rear wheels.

Hope this helps!

Shift into 5th, then push the car forward until marks line up. If no. 1 has to be TDC , ready to fire, remove the distributor cap and push car until the rotor aligns with no. 1 plug wire on the cap.

If I may ask, why do you wish to position the engine at TDC? Does this have anything to do with the fan?

"Short Hijack"

Is there a factory mark that would indicate the car has LSD?

I don't think that there is a mark for LSD. At least there isn't anything on my car. The best way to test is to lift both back wheels, take it out of gear and spin the wheels. If they go into the same direction, you gots LSD. I found out my car had it, when I went through the records before buying the car. Needless to say, I was a happy camper!

Yeah, I was just hoping I didn't have to take it down to the barn and jack it up. Thanx

Take it out to the street. Put it in first and drop the clutch at 4500 rpm. If you leave two strips of rubber, you got LSD.

I'm still a relative newbie and there must be a difference between early engines and your 80 that you cannot simply crank the motor over with a wrench directly onto the pulley. I would not typically reply to this type of thread cause I'm probably asking a stupid question cause everybody knows but me.

The engine mount on the later cars practically encases the crank pulley to the point where you can not get a wrench or socket on there.

To continue the hijack topic of LSD, lift both rear wheels off the ground. With the engine and emergency brake OFF and the gearbox in neutral, rotate one of the rear wheels by hand. If the gearbox has LSD, the opposite wheel should rotate in the same direction. If not, it'll rotate in the opposite direction or sit idle.
