My First Major Project
Hi all,
Well, will be starting my first major project on the car tomorrow with much appreciated assistance a fellow Pelicanite and PCQ member Steve Foss (SteveF_911 ). I'm pretty excited as we'll be dropping the engine to investigate some of my car's numerous oil leaks and undertake a few upgrades. Of most concern to me is the oil leak from the rear (pulley end) of the motor, which we're hoping will be the main seal, but maybe the No. 8 bearing 'o' ring. Whilst the engine is out will also be doing the following: clean engine check condition of clutch & pressure plate powder coat fan and tin ware clean and tidy up engine bay install new engine sound pad install 28 bar oil cooler polish and fit 8" Fuchs Should be an interesting process, just hope there aren't too many surprises! Will be taking photos along the way and will post any items of interest.

Cool! I can't wait to see the pictures.
BTW, I am planning something similar to this at a later date.

Why do you want to put in a sound pad? Do you want to hear your motor less?

Ditto on the powdercoated tips. I would have them masked. I rubbed mine also - heat = expansion. Add some stretch & you are trying to clean powdercoat off of your fan housing.
(my Saturday project)

Well guys, what did I say in the original post? Something along the lines of "just hope there aren't too many surprises"?
Well, the engine has now been completely dismantled after finding that it was definitely the No.8 bearing housing that was leaking. Earlier this week I submitted the crank, rods, pistons, barrels and heads to my local P-car expert for measurement and a general cleanup. Here are his findings... Crank - A1 Rods - A1 Pistons - toast, skirts and ring gaps worn significantly Barrels - toast, no longer round Heads - all 6 exhaust valves and 12 valve guides toast! Well, now in the process of ordering all of the above items, along with the other bits and pieces already identified as needing replacement. This is going to rather bruise the bank balance (about $AUD5,000 in parts so far), but when it's all paid for and done, I'll have a new motor! And also been told that the the late SC (81-83 204 hp model) high compression pistons will fit without any modifications, thus giving me a significant hp increase (around 20hp to 220hp I believe) - sweet!! Will post some pics in the coming weeks.
