Voltage Regulator???
this only happens once the car reaches oper. temp....car is 83sc
tach swings wildly from side to side and radio goes dead. (both intermittently) also, headlights intensify when on... failing regularor? battery? what could it be? edit: alternater and battery lights on dash never come on. Last edited by on-ramp; 05-19-2004 at 03:31 PM.. |

Typical overcharging alternator the result of an intermittent regulator.
Your alternator is probably a Paris-Rhone internal regulator alternator.

problem is temperature dependant, only happens when oper. temp is reached.
if it was the alternater, wouldn't it happen all the time? Last edited by on-ramp; 05-19-2004 at 06:27 PM.. |

Not necessarily, a certain component within the regulator may be highly temp
dependent causing the overcharging. This intermittent temp problem also occurs with the Perma-Tune CD ignition.

I recently had some charging issues on my 86 3.2 where it would intermittently overcharge, then undercharge causing my engine to sputter when overcharging.
I found the problem when I pulled the Paris Rhone regulator off the back of my alternator. The brushs were worn down to almost nothing so contact with the slip rings was poor and intermittent. The new regulator/brush assembly solved all my charging problems. Now if I could only find some new brushes for my old regulator, I would have a good spare or one that I could sell to someone who needed it instead of buying a rebuilt alternator for $300. My mechanic who sold me the voltage regulator for $85, says the new regulators at the dealer are now selling for $160. I feel like I got a deal. Cheers, Joe |

interesting, today i was accidently driving around with the front hood slightly ajar (not latched all the way down) and the problem didn't occur under the same conditions....battery was getting more air in this case.
Do you think my battery may be overheating and causing this? also, for some reason, the emergency brake light came on and stays on. hmmmmmm.... |

i tend to think that the battery wouldn't really receive all that much extra cooling benefit in the way you've described. i would still suspect the regulator from the description of the headlights and the swinging tach. but of course, if it is overcharging intermittently as the case seems to be, it could risk overcharging and damaging the battery.
do you have a digital voltmeter? hook it up while the car is idling to the ciggy lighter and watch and see if the 14 volt system fluctuates while running. or remove alternator and get it bench checked... ryan
