Reverse Lockout

Can anybody explain to me how this feature works & the bits involved? I'm convinced that I have a problem in this area & would like some ideas prior to tearing apart my console.

What kind of shifter are you using?

I found this image here on the BBS:

Basically, the little pawl prevents you from shifting straight down into Reverse directly from 5th.

Mike what is yours doing? My shifter was having problems going into the reverse/5th gate. Turns out the bottom of the shifter with the tab that slots into the gates is epoxied to the pawl that fits into the shifter cup. The epoxy came loose and allowed the shift to actually rotate just enough so things would not line up. If you do a search you can probably find my thread on this.

Kurt:
I'm grinding reverse on quick downshifts from5th. If i take my time, it's ok.
New bushings, et'c. & I think I have the coupler & stuff set right as everything else is great. I'm thinking I screwed up the lockout somehow when I had everything apart.

That's not a shifter/housing problem. That is more a shift coupler problem. If you can push shifter past the gate into the 5th/reverse pattern then the housing is set up correctly. It either goes in or it doesn't. I suspect you need to revisit how you lined up the coupler and shaft when you reassembled those parts.

Any suggestions- used the 101 Projects & the tech paper from here. Shifter vertical, rotate to 1st side of housing, coupler clockwise , etc.
Less clockwise, move coupler forward?
Anyhelp would be great.

I think that Kurt has it. When I rebuilt my coupler, etc. I had the "nick reverse while downshifting from 5th problem", which I didn't have prior to the rebuild. After staring at the coupler/shift rod and many trial and error rotating coupler adjustments, it was fixed.

It was fixed by adjusting the coupler rotation, not the back and forth adjustment. Try slightly less clockwise, but mark your current adjustment with a sharpie so you can back to it if required.
