Do I have S front calipers?

I have a 72 911t. I think this model came with M caliper. The rear are metal. The front ones have two bleeder screws per caliper and are nonmagnetic. Do I have S caliper then? The struts are red (?Koni). Does this mean that I can upgrade to bigger Brembo brakes later without changing to later '74 on struts?

The early caliper had a spread of 3 inches for the mounting bolts....later ones had 3.5. They may be "S" models but could be early ones....pull and pad and look....I believe S pads were different.....

Non-magnetic means non-ferrous. Unless you already have 4-piston calipers, this indicates aluminum S calipers - which means the caliper mounting bolts have a 3.5" spacing - which means you're all set for future brake upgrades.

72T came stock w/ M, someone would have to replace the struts to up grade to A or S, as has been mentioned measure the bolt spacing 3.5" is updated.

'72 T's could have been ordered with "S" front brakes. It was an option on "T" models. The "E's" came with S front calipers.

The alloy "S" calipers have a 3.5" bolt spacing. The "A" calipers also have the same spacing as well as the early 930 calipers. There is a little thickness difference in the replacement pads between the 930 & "S" calipers and the "A" calipers.

The "S" calipers have a brake line between the halves of the caliper. Does yours? Check out the mounting spacing. 3.5" center to center. The "m" pad is 2 3/8" long and overall 2 1/4" tall. The S pad is longer.

Absolutly not. There was an S look option, which consisted of the S spoiler and other S appearance items. It did not have the S brakes unless the owner put them on after purchase.

I have seen Es w/ S brakes but believe that in every case they were installed when the hydropneumatic struts were replaced. According to the factory all ES thru the G series also jhad M calipers

Will the popular 930 brakes fit inside 7X16 Fuchs?
I think I can do a 4 X 7X16 set on my narrow body with a little bit fender adjustment. my car may become worthy of those calipers soon.. thanks

Let me jump in here.
My 72 T which I purchased in 1980 came aith all "S" options including "S" calipers. Everything except the "S" motor. And it was noted on the Certificate of Authority from Porsche.

You can jump in all you want, but I won't believe you til I see the documentation. I owned a '72 and had all the factory documention from manuals to sales literature. The S look option did not include brakes. Pretty much everything else but not brakes.

My brothers 72T came with all S options AND it came with S brakes, listed seperately on the original window sticker. I've seen the window sticker with my own eyes when I bought the car for my brother. Live and learn.

One option that DID include 'S' brakes was the Sportomatic trans ... on all T's and E's, per Paul Frere!

Guys, I see a lot of claims and not a single piece of evidence. Just because your T now has S calipers doesn't mean it came that way.


I believe the confusion comes in because of the different rotor disks used. Vented or not.

**The following only discusses front calipers**

The S caliper was introduced on the B series 1968 S for use w/ vented 282.5x20mm rotors. The base model 911T had solid disks unless fitted w/ a Sportmatic in which case the S model ventilated disks were fitted. But in all cases the T used M front calipers. At that time the E also used M calipers. I have looked through all of the option codes in PET and Morgan and various other old sources, none has any reference to regular production option S calipers for use on a T or E.

For the C series cars introduced in July 1969, the T models also got the ventilated disks that had been previously std. on the E and S models. But the T continued the use of the M calipers. At this time the E also got the S caliper. This early S caliper had part # 901 351 975 10 and 976 10. There is a reference in PET but nowhere else to this caliper on a T.

For the E series in from Aug 1971 all models used the same vented disks but only the S and 2.7RS models used the updated 911 351 935 00 and 936 00 S calipers. The E and T both used the M.

This usage continued until the Aug 1973 G series when the S lost the S caliper, reverting to the M. The Carrera being the only model to use the S calipers.

The next change was on the Aug 1975 intro of the I series where all models got the A front caliper except the 930 turbio which continued to use the S caliper until the Aug 1977 start of the K series.
