Whats up with 911 prices?
Being in the market and looking for the right 911, I am seeing prices ranging from fair to who would buy at that price? I also recieved my issue of Excellence Mag with the 74-89 911 prices and those seem to be off too. I have been seeing a lot of Sc's and Carreras with high miles, with sellers asking anywhere from $15k to $19k for miles approaching 190k, I know that these cars should be run, but whats with the jump in high prices for high milage cars and some of these cars dont even have rebuilt engines or transmissions?

Let's not complaint about the high prices of Porsche, it's good for all of us in the long run to have high value on our cars vs. low

I'm seeing just the opposite.
I'm seeing a recent softening of the 911 marketplace, possibly due to the recent runup in prices. Maybe they just went up too high. Follow eBay and those high priced cars for a few weeks, and we'll see if that's just a subjective observation or more widespread.

Asking prices are a poor barometer of the market. Look at actual sales prices - ask people what they bought and how much. Really good cars will *always* carry a premium. These are the top 5% of all cars. Funny thing is, that 75% of people think that their car belongs in the top 5%.

I wouldn't let a high asking price turn me off from a 911.
The higher priced cars get fewer lookers which equals less competition and more time to make a deal on what might be a nicer than average 911. I would concentrate more on finding just what I want in year model, color. And in the best condition possible. There's a lot to consider, but a couple of extra grand to start of with might be the best money you ever spent. ![]() |

You have to really shop for a top quality 911SC for a good price. Many of the $11,000. 911SC's are going to need about $3,000 to $4,000 worth of work, putting you back in the $14,000 to $15,000. range.

I do agree that true value depends on what people are actually paying. I must say, I have been watching NADA pricing for the last year. According to NADA, Retail values on a 79SC Targa went up $1k in the last 5 months. I thought that at the least it was encouraging.
Also, I paid $11.6k four years ago for mine. But, I've put more than that in it in the last 4 years. Buy carefully, but buy as nice a one as you can afford. As we all know, or "will" know, repairs/restoration are not cheap.

There's a '76 912 with a few bubbles under a bad respray near us for sale with an asking price of... $15,000. Not surprisingly, it's been sitting there for a few months.
I can't understand why they belive they'll fetch that kind of a price.

Hey John, Maybe they were switched in the same repair shop, like babies in the hospital. Too bad you don't live closer, cause we might be able to get them right. Alan Poh '77 Carrera 3.0 |

I really hope we have seen the last of the bottoming out on 911 prices. It is nice to see a rebound on these cars. I really do think you get what you pay for...saying that don't get taken advantage of. If you take your time you will find some very nice original, lower mileage cars in great shape. You may pay slightly more but you will have so much less headaches it will be worth it.

Never base prices off of Excellence's Market reports. Bruce Anderson has no clue of the market, and no integrity for that matter. I sent in a market report to him on my Speed Yellow 993 with very rare options back in 1998. It showed up in Excellence 2 years later. Exact wording. The Bruce Anderson market reports are total jokes.

The only number you should trust is the number in your head, as you are standing there with a wad of cash in your hands, about to give it to the seller.
That is the definition of the market. All others should not mean much.

Plavan,
I send BA a market report on my SC when I purchased it was placed in the very next issue. I actually feel that the market reports that Excellence provides does give a pretty picture of the market. I am not sure it take into consideration seasonal and locationional data, but I think he is pretty close. At least my .02 cents.
