Okay, help me out. I heard the secret to not getting oil all over the place. Punch a small hole in the filter and use compressed air to empty the filter into the tank. This sounds easy, but wouldn't this possibly put some bad stuff back in your oil tank. I hesitate to change my filter half way through the oils life because it makes such a mess. Any thoughts on this? Is this what the mechanics do when your car goes in for a change?

HOw about just stuff two rags under the oil filter, quickly spin in off, wife off the excess, spray it with some carb cleaner, wipe, and forget about it.

I would be concerned about blowing the filtered sludge back into the motor. Not a good "technique", IMHO. Just place a bunch of paper towels under the filter and dispose.

Making a mess removing the oil filter is not a problem with these cars. The technique you refer to was recommended in a recent Pano for use on Boxsters I believe.
You're more likely to make a mess putting oil in a 930 than removing the filter. A small funnel with a big mouth/"tube' gets around that problem. -Chris

Boxster filters spin on from underneath. They are in a housing that is reused. You don't poke a hole in that. You'd have to blow the oil straight up anyway. Must have been another car.
You could poke a hole in the top of the 911 filter if you just pulled in off the road. I wait 15 minutes after draining the tank, not much oil in there to worry about. |

Zeke is right. Just wait a few minutes and there is no mess.
Jeff.
