inner seat belt mount for 5-points (plus seat change)

I have a question regarding seat belt mounting.

For those of you who have added inner mounts via an eye bolt and a Big washer, do you have any wisdom to share on this? I have read in an old thread on the board to watch out for fuel lines.

I'm choosing to do this instead of use a stock mount because I probably will switch to a recaro SRD soon, which does not have a provision for mouting the belt onto the seat, as I understand it. So I guess I will have to mount the clicker for the 3-point belt on the tunnel as well. Alternatively, I could weld a tab onto the SRD for a seat-based mounting, but I don't think this system is as good, and I have to buy a brey-krause item to be able to clip the belts in and out. (problem is expense, not brey-krause's products, which are excellent)

I suppose that either of these mounting methods for a 3-point belt (welded tab onto SRD or tunnel mount with eye bolt and Big washer) could come into play in an insurance situation for a street accident, since neither are stock mounting. I would personally feel more comfortable with a tunnel mount rather than a welded tab.

As an aside, I have noticed that my '81 non-sport seats are far less supportive than some non-sport seats I have in a '92 968, which are identical to a same-year 964 seat. They look very very similar, but the older seats are definitely less supportive. If I had later seats I would not be as keen on replacing them, but obviously the sub-belt situation is still a PITA with any stock seats.

{end rambling}

TIA

Also, the car is DE/Street, no racing ever.

BUMP because... I'm ordering belts and hardware today, and I'm curious if anyone has wisdom on center tunnel mounts for the inner lap belt on a 5-pt. I'm also curious whether people have opinions on mounting the stock 3-point inner mount on the tunnel. This may not work well because it won't slide with the seat...? but the insurance question is a more interesting one.

thanks, everybody.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but I simply mounted my "inner lap belt" to the factory tab that is used for the factory inner seat belt mounting. In fact, I have the factory latch "stalk" and the 5-point harness belts installed at the same time so that I can use them interchangeably.

I have lengthy technical piece on Rennlist that goes specifically to this issue. It doesn't copy well...you'll have to enter and search.

OK guys, this helps a lot.

It sounds like My car actually has the inner mount on the tunnel. I just don't have access to the car until tonight.

I just have one more question:

for a car that has a tunnel mount and a stock '74+ seat, has anyone used a standard eye bolt or is the BK-9001 necessary?

I understand why this item is needed for a car with the seat mounted belt, but I'm not sure for a stock tunnel mount. It would be fairly easy to tell by looking at the car, but I don't have the car here

Thanks again, in advance!

I wondered about this, but his car being an '81 and mine a '76, I figured it did....

I think it does.

Mike, do you clip your belts in and out? If so, did you use a brey-krause 9001 on the inside, or just an eye bolt? What seats do you have?

Thanks,

Andy

I used the short G-force eyebolt to replace the factory inner seat belt mount bolts, and clip in ends on a FIA G-force camlock.

No drilling required (except for the anti-sub strap).

Thanks for your response, Tom. I am doing exactly the same as you did and just placed my order.

So there was no interference with anything using the short eyebolt on the tunnel? Are you using stock seats?

Also, did you use the short bolts for everything else as well, including the sub? I just ordered a backing plate to use with another short g-force bolt, for the sub.

Thanks!

Here is a pic, left of frame is front of the car:

You need to swing the stock pieces to the back when you use the harness, the rubber boot gets in the way.

Seats are 1980s vintage Recaros.

Thanks Tom, that pic really clears things up.

Tom, did you use a g-force short (20mm) eye bolt for the sub?

Thanks Again!

I haven't mounted the subs yet, but the plan is to use the long G-force eye bolt and trim it.

The short bolt may be long enough, but I wasn't sure when I ordered it, so I erred on the side of caution. It has to pass through the pan, a 1/8' backing plate, and a washer & lock washer.

Andy,

My belts (TRW/Sabelt camlocks) have the plate on the ends of the lap belts with the mounting hole in them in lieu of the snap type fitting, so I simply re-used the factory bolt at this location.

Thanks, Mike. I'm going the clippy route, so my situation is a little different. Any idea how much thread the bolt you used through the floor (for the sub) had? The choices are 20mm and 50mm, I ordered the 20 and I hope it will be long enough. It just has to go through the floor, 1/8" backing plate, nut, and washer, since it's an eye bolt and can be clipped onto. I think 20mm will be OK.

Best,

I did an autocross. They really hold you in the seat.

I wouldn't do anything other than autocross with them as 4 point, it isn't safe. Autocross speeds are slow enough, and there isn't anything to hit.

Mike, mine came with bolt in fittings as well, but it is easy to swap and the Snap Hooks are only $3 each.

Much appreciated, Tom. I'll keep that in mind. I'm doing a DE on Sunday, So I will probably either get the sub in or use 3 points.

Sorry to hijack thread but, is there a site for G-force. I'm picking up a Brey-Krause harness bar and looking at options for AX and DE's. Thanks
