gauge problem

I have recently purchased my first Porsche, which is an 89 911 Targa. Yesterday and then again today I noticed the oil level gauge on the dash reading very high, not the pressure gauge, in fact right off the scale and almost bending the needle. This has not happened before, and I haven't added more oil or anything like that. It goes high then a short while afterwards goes to a norman position for a while before reading high again.
Any ideas any one?

And hello to you all

Check the oil with the dipstick and see if the fuller than full condition agrees with the gauge?
