Thanks for the link! I'm not sure what that does, but it gets past the evil Websense.

I'm in on July 10th or 11th, Ortega is a blast, a run through south LA county into Orange county along PCH would be cool too.
Doesn't matter as long as I don't have to drive three hours in stop and go traffic just to get home from Malibu.

This would make a great way to send Chip off to the Great Highway... I will see if the guy and I can make it. Thanks!

Hey Jack - I don't know if I had mentioned before that I really like the 911 on your hatch -

I have a question for you, as you know, I am a big fan of my 85 Turbo look, which in my opinion was the 80's version of todays "S" model (turbo brakes with turbo body)

What would you think of a "911S" lettering on a 80's Turbo Look?

If it's a 7am start I'm in! Orange County would be great but I'm not opposed to going up to LA.

My car's been apart for 4 weeks and should be running tonight or tomorrow. This sounds like the perfect opportunity to get re-acquainted!

Ok, so its next Sat. or Sun. but where? If Orange County I probably won't make it, if Malibu, I will. Another excellent run is up the 5 north of LA to Green Valley via' San Francisquito road, which is where the Saint Francis Dam collapsed back in the 1930's, from Green Valley, you return via' Seco Canyon, and there's a great French restaurant, La Chene on Sierra Highway out in the middle of nowhere. No CHP, no bicyclists. Its about an hour each way, less for many of you. I'd offer to do coffee and donuts at my house in Newhall, I have a 300 foot driveway and can park plenty of vehicles.

You can visit a crude map I drew, put in powerpoint and then uploaded to my website here. map clicky

I'm in, and I'm partial to trying something like Hugh mentioned. I like deserted foothill/mtn roads as opposed to PCH on a weekend.

This sounds like lots of fun! I agree with Todd...PCH during summer, even early, won't be fun.

There are a lot of good routes to take. I would like to get as many drivers as possible. I have never planned one of these before but it looks like the turn-out will be good. I was thinking PCH so we can get more drivers from both OC and LA together. Most people know where PCH is. I have no idea what traffic or police will be like but so far it won't seem that bad. Here is what I have come up with so far.

Date: July 10th - Saturday Morning
Time: 7AM
Route: Tenative PCH (Newport Beach to Malibu or vice versa), although Jack's mountain route looks incredibly fun too.

Start: ??
Finish: ?? Possible Malibu Inn as suggested.

Any help to plan this is appreciated such as start location/finish locations, in either city.

the Baldy route would be about equal pain for OC and LA folk, especially if we started in Claremont (OC can run straight up the 57 and then just a bit east on the 10). That would be pretty much deserted twisties from Claremont to Azusa. I'm afraid I can't get too excited about getting up early to head south then cruise slowly back north up PCH.

I'd join up around Venice or so to head to food though

Can you set-up a poll to see what people would rather do and we will go with that - I am up for either route.

You know, we are talking about two completey different drives here.

One is a cruise and it will go (according to the map) through some pretty tacky areas and about a million signaled intersections. Personally, I would vote for abandoning PH before entering Long Beach and getting on the 405 freeway. Nothing here, folks, and the same is true for Lomita, Willmington and Torrance. You could veer off and drive around PV peninsula and troll for some more cops. But the freeway to the Santa Monica Fwy and back onto PCH will eliminate most of the dark side of SoCal.

OTOH, the drive thru Baldy is a challenging route, to say the least, and very little traffic early. The further up you go, the less cars you see. It's not place for a bonzai run as there will be the occasional Decathalon bicyclist that has been on the road since 4AM and has made it well into the mountains. (Lord, how do they do that?) And some other explorer types in cars and on motorcycles. But, it's out there and your cell phone won't phone home on most of the route.

Where's the poll?

I second Zeke concerning the Caravan up PCH. It would be near impossible not to get separated along that route, much of the center section is pretty boring and to correct Zeke, closer to 2 million intersections! Never done Baldy, I'd be game.
