Where to buy a dummy 930 engine?
I've been hording parts for a twin turbo project for several years now. The plan is/was to bolt together an empty "dummy" motor to use for fitment purposes - all the "project" parts are bolt-ons.
The problem is this dummy motor is nickel-diming me to death. I have an old '77S case, 2.4L heads, etc etc to cobble together. Many ancillary parts are missing and cost too much to buy individually - especially the 930 parts. So I'm thinking of scrapping the whole idea and buying a complete junk 930 engine. I have absolutely no idea what cost this might be or who might have a damaged or non-rebuildable motor laying around. I do not want a usable engine. Rods hanging out the side of the case would be fine, rodents living in the air filter preferred. Another option would be a plastic replica like they have for Chevy or Ford swaps. The plastic engine has all the studs and bolt holes to hang accessories. Do they make these for Porsches? I need ideas. I've got a shelf full of odd-ball crap I'd rather sell than keep adding to. What have you guys done?

I have to believe that between this BBS and Rennslist there are enough of us that would donate old crap that doesn't work. Do you have a list of what you need ?

I've thought about e-bay but shipping might be prohibitive from Porsche hotbeds such as California.
A list is developing, and growing, that is what started this thread. I'll put one together and see just how bad it is. One part that has proven surprisingly elusive is a 930 intake manifold. I figured all the EFI guys would be throwing those at me. I also need a set of chain covers and a junk fan. Also need valve covers. And engine tin. I'll make a list.

Here is the thing I don't get. I paid good money to convert my car to EFI. Why would I give my old parts away? I want to try to recoop some of my money that I paid so I ain't givin my parts away. So I am guessing you are going to have to cough up some money to get some parts. Sucks huh

Rarly, I've got a couple camshaft housings you can have, they're 3 bearing but should be fine for mock up.

You might be able to borrow some. If I had anything I would gladly lend it to you, but EFI is a long way off for me...

I know what you're saying Dean. I have to sell off old parts in order to finance my projects. In my mind there are some parts that are worth next to nothing - the parts everyone replaces or upgrades. A good example is a 3DLZ turbo. I've got 4 of them, want to buy one? Hell no you don't 'cause they're junk and everyone is throwing them away. That is what I thought of the stock 930 CIS manifold. In my mind it is a worthless castaway. Obviously I am wrong about that 'cause I can't find one cheap.
Mike, I'll take your offer for the cam housings. E-mail me your address and shipping charges. Thank you for the offer but I'd rather not borrow parts, this project could easily take a year to complete. So far I've got a fine collection of junk. Any servicable part I buy will be fixed up and sold cheap when the fabbed parts are placed on the real motor. All the other "scrap" will be given away or taken to the junkyard. So look close when I post pictures of the project. If you see any parts you want give me a holler. I have a long list of Pelicanites who have helped me out along the way. I plan to give back to the board. This evening before I chased the kids around with white hot wires spraying shards of molten metal I dug out some of my "treasures". I just started laughing at this crap. I gotta take some pictures so you can see what I'm working with. My wife doesn't buy the method to my madness line. I found some damaged tin pieces, a few iron heads, a nasty looking fan housing, a set of 6 cut off exhaust flanges some fella gave me at least 5 years ago ....... Anyway there are a few expensive parts I will need. One of them is the funky shaped pipe that connects the BOV to the turbo air inlet. I might try to fab one of those but it looks a bit tricky. How about a set of warped valve covers? All 911s leak oil at some point and are upgraded to turbo covers. Surely there are some covers too warped to fix. I'll shoot some pictures and post them here for giggles. We'll have a Cooter meets ANDIAL engine build. HA!

Brian,
You should have a vast supply rusting away right next door – Big Easy flood victims. Try the salvage operations. I’ll bet they can’t give the stuff away. Best, Grady

I've got junk valve covers. PM me your address, and I'll send them your way.
If you still needed a block, I'd send you the 930 case with a big hole in the side I've got sitting around here somewhere... Need any junk cylinders? |

Good call Grady! I'll give that a shot.
Thanks! I'll PM my address Dantilla. How much would it cost to ship the 930 case? What is the difference between a 930 case and the '77S case I have? I have a set of iron cylinders from a 2.4L, aluminum would be nice for weight savings. The block/case will be empty. I will not bolt on any parts that are not essential in representing the area I have to work around with the turbo plumbing. I'm gonna drag all this stuff out tonight and see what else may be missing. The dizzy and heat ducts can be ommitted once I find that odd-shaped pipe that connects the BOV to the turbo air inlet. I have a motor mount cross bar somewhere, I think I also have a motor mount from a cabriolet - the one with the funky shock on it. This is gonna be fun, I haven't seen most of this stuff in years. I've got a lot of crap from my old '73T 2.4L MFI car and the '78SC as well. Looks like it may be time to clean out the garage!

Hey Mike I got your care package today! Thanks!
You did not give me a shipping cost. This package was heavy - I owe you some money. I just missed a misfit fan shroud for sale. Anyone have a cheap ugly fan shroud? I plan to clean and paint all these misfit parts so ugly is good.

This monster was waiting for me when I got home from work on Friday. Unbelievable! The fact that someone would go to all the trouble to package these items, reinforce with wood AND inject mold foam is over the top. Now add in shipping cost for a package that weighs 72 pounds. ALL AT NO COST. You guys are something special. Dan - I owe you big time.
