ST project update: How low can you go?!
Happy Independence Day to all!
I knew it would happen someday. Since I am slowed down on the engine tuning (see my other posts) I had a long list of things to do on the project. Today was the day I set the suspension up. I still have to do my alignment and corner balance but the ride height is... shall I say Dead Nutz On! Thanks to Thom and Will Ferch for the spring plate calculator. It works well! I first read the angle on the top of the rockers inside the door. Then I subtracted the angle from the calculator and dialed in the springplates until they matched. Worked first time. Here is the new ride height. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture, the car was pinned in by the trailer and my targa. ![]() As you can see, the top of the tire is just tucked under the edge of the fender. I should ahve plenty of clearance for that fat rubber. ![]() I set up the car with max negative camber. I must have about -6 deg. I will dial that back a few deg. I know this will change when I set toe on the rear. ![]() The front is spot on about -1.5 deg. I also setup the pedal cluster complete with new bushings, new clutch cable and pin. I even istalled one of the seats and sat in the car. I was going so fast my mouth got sore from all the noises of engines and screeching tires. Oh yeah, the new Bielstein seats fit great. I have to make new mounts since I need more head clearance. Time to get out the welder... The next step is brakes and I hope to be around the block in the car on Monday! PS Go Postal!, go Tyler!

Man that's beautiful. And I was planning to build up a 73 EXACTLY like that. That's how much I like it. Looks like I need a different scheme now..

Nice work Jamie! The car looks awesome.
Here's a shot of the brackets I used for my Beilsteins. these dropped the seat height ~ 2". Cheap and easy. ![]() Last edited by Shuie; 07-03-2004 at 06:48 PM.. |

Cornpanzer, you can get the seats from Stefan an GTS in Las Vegas. I think Pelican is selling them also.

Cornpanzer, I got my seats last year from Germany before there was a US distributor.
the wheels are 17x8.5 and 9.5 with 235/255-40-17 rubber. They were made by Lindsey Racing on cut Fuchs centers. These particular wheels are recycled from BB1. Should be more than enough rubber for my (hopefully) sub-2000 pound car. Bob, I have a pair of side scripts just like yours waiting in a box. I still have to finish some paint work and will wait until its rubbed out to install. Shaun, There have not been lots of updates recently. I did get the car running last week and that brought on a few problems with timing and the CD box. I hope to get those sorted shortly. OK off to go install some brakes I rebuilt yesterday...

interesting project..
Are the ST front flares like the 9" turbo flares? How does the rear flares compare to that of a Carrera ('87)? Could you post a front pic? Good looking car. |

Spinner,
The front flares are similar to the 930 in width. The shape is slightly differnent. The rear flares were cut from an 86 Carrera. They were then hand pulled and rounded to match the shape of the front. I posted a decription about them somewhere. ST Project update: roll your own(long with pics) I widened them about 1/2-3/4" in the process of reshaping them. Other pics of the car are here. ST Project. fitment of body and wheels ST Project: Where'd the car go?! Oh to paint...(pics)

I now have brakes on the car. Tonight I should be able to fill and bleed the system, install the CVs and take the maiden voyage. This will be my first drive in this car.

Shaun, I put the SC brakes from my donor. they will suffice with ducting until I can save my pennies (Wow that's a lot of pennies) for a brake kit of sorts. They are nice and clean with pistons that move by finger tip. Good rebuilt is better than none.
Thanks Dave, I will try to hurry up and make sure I go slow enough to do things correctly.

I can't wait to see this in person. I will be in Dallas in a few months and this may warrant a drive down to Austin. If my job sends me to Dallas (very likely), I'll have a house with a garage and will be looking for a big project like this one. My 993 is almost set up just perfectly - Big Reds going on this weekend, C2S split grill in the mail. Then I'm done, will be bored and will need a new project. Jamie, your project is tempting me...

Jamie, I just realized I have a good set of rear SC calipers. IIRC, they are freshly rebuilt. Holler if you can use them and I'll overnight or 2nd day them to you.
