Question OT: Who makes and who retails 5w40 oil?

Howdy,

Any ideas as to who manufactures 5w40 oil, and which national chains can order it / carry it?

Thanks-
BG

Brian,

I looked this up awhile ago because a friend recently bought a Honda Civic that recommends 5W40. I know one of the makers was Valvoline. PepBoyZ carries Valvoline stuff. So does AutoZone.

Do a Google/Netscape/whatever search and see what you find. I don't remember my search being too extensive. Only took me a few mins. to find what I needed.

Shell also makes several synthetic 5/40s

Kmart or Wall Mart are usually cheapest, especially in gallon jugs

Yes, Shell Helix "Ultra" 5W-40 synthetic is what I use.

No offense to red-beard here. Oil for SUVs? When I first saw that marketing scheme awhile back, I got a good chuckle. What a load of crap. Special oil for SUVs............. gimme a break.

Trucks and SUVs...It is rated for diesel, so I expect it has more of the additive package. But at least it's not PTFE or something.

Here's a question. If PTFE does nothing more than clog filters, why would a filter manufactrer put PTFE in thier filter? Pre clogged?

From the TDI boards, I'm informed the Truck and SUV Mobil 1 is Delvac 1... I currently use Shell Rotella 5-40 Full Synthetic in the Jetta and 911 (~13.00/gal @ walmart). No issues with cooling, leaks, coldstart. the 911 has 75000 miles.

Delvac 1300 like Shell Rotella -T are both high quality mineral oils for fleet service , usu heavy machinery. Nothing wrong woth that as used in our 911's. It's not a synthetic.

---Wil

EDIT:
My mistake. Indeed Delvac 1300 is a mineral oil, but Delvac 5W40 is a synthetic... much like the fact there is a Shell Rotella-T mineral oil and a 5W40 Shell Rotella Synthetic.

Motul 300V 5W-40. Ester synthetic. Exact spec as run by the Subaru WRC team. I use it in the STI and the Audi S4. It's available by mail order from many places.

Note that I'd only use 5W-anything in a modern, tight clearance motor that requires it. The 911 gets 20W50, otherwise it will drain out the bottom as fast as I can fill it.

This is going in my 99 Audi A4 2.8 30V. We have such big temp swings here I want the 5w on the light end for the cool weather and to thwart my leaking tensioner gaskets from getting worse (high oil pressure zone especially at startup), yet need some extra protection on the hot end. It was 88-90 here 2 days ago and way humid thus my oil temps were climbing over 235 F in traffic (too hot for me in that motor). Last night it was 48 F outside...

Thanks for the leads...
