Alternator advice needed 73T CIS

I have all the classic bad alternator / regulator symptoms.
I removed the alternator it is a MARCHAL.
I would like any opinions or advice on rebuild vs. upgrade to new BOSCH alternator with internal regulator?
Any one purchased a new BOSCH alternator from pelican or else where for use in a 72 or 73?
Was the install an exact fit?
Alternator cable connections need any modification?
What happens with the old external regulator?
Anyone try to rebuild a MARCHAL or know of a GOOD shop that can?
Any and all advice is welcome; I want to do this right!

A good friend of mine upgraded his alt. from an ext. regulator to an internal one. I belive there is only one connection you leave out (blue wire?) and you can leave the old regulator alone. The newer alternators should be an exact fit but I can't say for sure(it worked for him)

You can also get your old alt. rebuilt. Post where you're at and I'm sure someone can recommend a place near you.

Any well-established and reputable alternator/motor rebuilding shop should be able to rebuild your alternator. That is the way to go ... unless you are familiar with replacing bearings, and testing and replacing diodes, etc. in other alternators.

Bosch never made an internally-regulated alternator for a 911! The 1982 - 1989 IR model alternators were mfr by Paris-Rhone and Valeo ... and have the worst reliabilty record of any electrical part ever put on a '64 - '89 911!

The 1975 - 1981 980 Watt Motorola/Marchal/SEV is the best alternator fitted to 911 models, but machining or replacement of your fan housing/mount would be required to install.

Bosch doesn't make an internal regulator alternator compatiable with your early
fan housing. There are aftermarket ones (non-Bosch), but generally ALL internal
regulated alternators are to be avoided on air cooled engines. It's just not a good
idea to have an electronic device (the regulator) setting in an oven (911 heads).

I just replaced mine last month. I found a rebuilt unit on the shelf at Foreign Intrigue in Maine. They UPSed it and I had it the next day. I think it was something like $200 exchange. Give them a call.
