How to do a search using 2 words?

I want to do a seach on "paint code" How can I make sure the search engine will only show posts where the 2 words are used?

Right now, I get all posts where paint is used and all those where code is used.

I tried that and it doesn't work. I also tried paint + code and "paint code" and got identical results.

It always works fine for me.

the search can be further narrowed if you know the name of the author.

Using and/or along w/ the author and even limiting search to only a single forum eliminates a lot of wasted time.

Send a message via AIM to Az911
The search can also be narrowed by the sub forums. That way you are not searching the whole bbs

The paint code on my 79 SC is 708-9-3. I want to understand what it means.

I already know that 708 means Black metallic. I would like to know what the 9 and the 3 represent.

To find posts with paint and code in the same post, select the "Show results as posts" radio button.

To find the phrase "paint code" Wayne would have to switch to other forum software.

"and" does not need to be capitalized,

you do nneed to think like a machine. The 2 words merely have 2 be in the same thread they do not have to be contiguous or even in the same post

look, you don't just want an article that has paint and code in it. You want an article that has the exact phrase "paint code". So use your quotation marks and search for "paint code". You ought to find what you need.

708-9-3 :

708 = colour
9 = coachbuilder (9=Porsche)
3 = paint manufacturer (eg 2=Glasurit, I think 3=Lechler)

I have encountered the same problem and found it very annoying. Many search engines would take "paint code" and only pull up instances where the two terms are contiguous. Not this search engine. It means you get tons of articles you don't want, i.e. any article with thewhere words are not contiguous. When I use the search engine I waste tons of time because of this feature. For example, what if I wanted all articles about this "search engine" and it returns any article with the word "engine" in it. Quite a bit to wade through.

I think I've mastered ebay searches. I've got google search down pretty well too. I'm not sure about the best methods to use the search in Pelican forums however. Multi word phrases, two letter words, quotation marks - What works best?

I don't get any different results whether I do use the word "AND" or not between search terms. Caps or small doeesn't matter either. The FAQ section doesn't really explain how to search very well either.

I'd appreciate ay tricks on using the search feature!

This is a very good question, I have never been able to use it effectively. I know some people are very good at it but I cant see what they are doing. I thought I was an idiot :-))!

I agree, for some reason I thought using quotes around 2 words brings back search results for those two words contigously...not just threads that happen to contain both words SOMEWHER in the thread. The quotes trick works perfectly on yahoo and google. Maybe Wayne could jump in here and clear this up. I ran into this trying to search for "top end rebuild".

Elombard, you're not the only one! I've been searching this board for 6 months and I still can't figure it out.

Do quotation marks need to be used like: "paint and code"
Or just use it like this: paint and code
If I use the author's name, is there a special place for the name to go or just insert it in like this: paint and code and author

Any and all help will be appreciated!

There is a box for the user/member's name in the search page. I have also found the search function to be maddening at times here; I have put in a word or phrase that is absolutely in the post or title and not gotten any results.

I then continue searching and eventually find the thread that I was searching for, and sure enough, there is the original phrase or word that I was using!

Maddening.

To search for two-letter words like SC, try using a wildcard: SC*

OK. I've got it now. I just went to Google and did a search (with the quotes) for "Porsche 911 Technical Forum" "while the engine is out" and then click "repeat the search with the omitted results included". I got the results I was looking for about what seals I should replace while I have my engine out.

I feel stupid for not thinking of that before. - just use the google search engine on the related forum! I am much better at using that search engine and it has a few more options.

Problem solved!

Ken
