My SC is totalled :(

Got the call from my insurance company while away on vacation, they are going to total my 80SC after a mishap with a slick road and a light pole. The estimated the damage at 14K. They are offering me 14K cash, or 11K plus the car. Of course, they have not seen my receipt book yet, so I may be able to negotiate more. I will keep the car and do something with all of the good parts and other goodies. The car suffered damage to the hood, bumper, valance, both fenders, and front tub. The car is basically fine from the doors back. They could not locate any used parts, so the cost of repairs went thru the roof. I was not even speeding at the time, but a series of bummer events led to the accident, including a wet road, silt, etc...

Now, I need to decide what to do. I have all of the track goodies on my current car, which I could easily put into/onto another car. Or, I could sell my daily driver Civic, part out the SC and buy something newer. Even a Boxster has crossed my mind (ducking for cover). Damn, I am really gonna miss this car, especially driving events at Willow...

In any case, I'll probably have a laundry list of parts for sale soon...

The big question is the tub. How much damage? The fenders/ hood/ bumper are easily sourced used and replaced. Even a new front clip can be welded in if the damage doesn't go to far back.

Glad to hear that you are ok. It is your civic duty to part this car out to your fellow pelicans The silver lining is that this is a great time of year to replace your car wether its a Boxster or 911. Hopefully you can get a little more from the insurance company and keep the car.

How about an early tub for the whole enchilada?

An $11,000 check from the insurance company, less $4,000 cost for a good tub... equals a quick, light car and $7,000... for tires.

thanks for the replies guys Jack, I like your way of thinking! Actually, the car has not even been on a lift yet, so I do not really know how bad things are, other than the obvious. The car was suppose to go to TRE for repairs, but the insurance company wanted to come look at the car before paying to have it trucked down there. I know one rear sway bar mount was ripped off, and there is probably front suspension damage as well. Maybe I'll look for a '74 or earlier tub so I can be smog exempt too Decisions, decisions....

Now you have a lot of options. Sorry to hear that they totaled it but I had the same thing happen years ago and after showing them the receipts received almost $10k more for the car.

I just backdated my 85 911 and have both front fenders, front and back hood and all the hardware needed to mount it if you are looking. Painted silver and in excellent condition.

That said, I really like the way my car looks after backdating it...

Sorry about your encounter of the wrong kind, glad you are OK. It seems Californians have the same issue with rain as those in North Carolina had last week with a little snow.

Dealing with an insurance company is a contest of will. Unless you are strong, they will outlast you. Your main weapon is to document “like kind and quality.”

A few years ago, Karen did a slow full gainer in her Land Cruiser with Chris asleep in the passenger seat. No injuries. Original paint, 370K miles and in perfect condition. The car (truck) had another 300K+ in it and a new replacement was $40K+ and not what we wanted. The insurance company offered $1700 – excuse me.
With some research of the Land Cruiser Club (akin to PCA) and the input from three dealers, we settled on $9600 and kept the car for parts.

The bottom line is that it is worth your while to do your homework and argue your case. Everyone should keep receipts, notes, and beautiful photos of your 911 just to be able to argue “kind and quality.”

Just like keeping your eye out for a barn find Carrera Speedster, always be shopping for a better deal in insurance. It is easy and cheep when you don’t need it. Insurance companies are interested in only one thing – your money and how much of it they get to keep.

At least the insurance hasn't caught on to the idea that parting a 911 is worth a heck of a lot more than $3000. Some of the parts houses are charging that much for just your sheet metal.

Man, I really am sorry to hear about that. Glad you are okay, though. My SC got totalled about a year and a half ago and it broke my heart. But the good news is that 911 prices are dropping into the abyss. So I was able to take the insurance money from my 1980 SC and throw in a few extra grand to "forward date" myself into a 1989 964. The emotional loss can never be healed - but the "Holy Freaking *****" kick from my 3.6 liter TorqueMonster certainly dulls the sting!! Plus the C4 is rock solid in the wet.

Sorry to hear about your car Brad but seriously anytime someone walks away from an accident in one of these cars that are very small and lack the safety advantages of the newer cars today, they should consider themselves fortunate!
